Sallie Mae / Barclaycard 5% Pending

Postby CarefulBuilder14 » Fri Aug 22, 2014 11:45 pm

I only had two hard pulls on TU, one from last month (Chase CLI) and one from 2012. With all the books I buy on Amazon, I decided to go for the Sallie Mae Rewards card (5% gas, grocery, books).

One card for each major payment network (with PRG closing) would be a good resting place.

Instead of an instant approval or denial, I got:

"Thank you for your recent application. We're in the process of reviewing the information you provided for your Sallie Mae World MasterCard application.

Please keep in mind it may take up to 10 business days to process your application. There is no need to reapply. If you provided an email address, we will send you an email upon review of your application. Please feel free to check back as this page will display the most recent status updates."

With Barclaycard, do they just want a human to look over a card when the application is at night? Or is an application under review usually an approval or denial?

Under review actually means under review with them. Don't fret and call them up, they're very flexible. People recommend not calling if you have a lot of inquiries because the reps are very conservative, more so than the computer.
FICO TU - 728 - 8/14
FICO EX - 716 - 7/14
FICO EQ - 740 - 7/14

Bank of America Cash Rewards - $2,400
Best Buy - $3,000
American Express Blue Cash Everyday - $8,000
American Express Everyday - $10,000
Discover It Chrome - $500 (AU on fiancée's card, helping her build credit)
American Express Platinum - NPSL
Barclaycard Arrival+ - $3,000
Capital One Yamacard - $11,000

True. I'd rather have them not ask to pull Experian, too, and see all the inquiries (though they would know they exist from the open cards).

One more inquiry on TU, on the other hand, doesn't hurt at all.

Just FYI about my Discover:
Back in May I applied, with no hard pulls on TU, 1 recently opened AMEX (Feb). Applied at weekend midnight and got pending.

Whether Discover or Barclaycard or others, pending most likely means they want to verify information. There is no indication on either approval or denial when receiving a pending message.

Reasons on getting pending status may or may not be: new accounts, recent inquiries, not enough credit history, changed address and so on, but really uncertain. When their business hour comes you can call them and discuss your application.

From what I heard Barclaycard is "allergic" to inquiries. If there are some recent hard pulls it could be difficult to get approved.
Citi Forward Visa $5000 10/2012 | American Express Blue Cash Everyday $8000 2/2014 | Discover it $7000 5/2014
Chase Freedom Visa Signature $7000 6/2014 | Citi ThankYou Premier Visa Signature $5000 1/2015

I'm not clear on whether it is better to call them first or let them decide first and call them if they give a denial. I am more interested in the rewards than the CL.

I could always go into gardening / app hibernation for 6 months and reapply.

At the very least, I can get the experience of what it's like to make a recon call.

Any tips for handling the matter of my fairly new BCE if they ask? I know the Barclaycard app is a bit of a stretch with recent inquiries. I'll probably just say I've heard they have good service and the rewards program suits my typical spending well.

I've had 5 TU inqs this year and my last one was back in early June so I'm getting to close to three months without any new inquiries on that report which I also think is my best one FICO score wise. Just wondering how long you've been using credit.

Well, there's been no real news...just an email from Barclaycard verifying that the application was received and no decision had been made yet - the same thing their website had said before, just now in email form.

The curious thing is that CK and Credit Sesame usually send alerts the next day when I have TU or EX pulls. Neither has sent an alert. Quizzle doesn't work for me so I don't know about Equifax.

That would suggest that either Barclaycard pulled EQ for me - unusual, as I thought they mostly did one TU pull - or they haven't even pulled my credit yet and are waiting for next week to do it.

I've had credit for 11 months now. Got the BoA 9/2013, Best Buy 3/2014, AmEx ED and BCE 7/2014, AmEx Plat 8/2014, Arrival Plus 8/2014. I'm not getting anything new until 2015, when I plan on getting the Freedom and the Sallie Mae. I might get one or two more cards if there seems to be anything interesting at that point in time.
