Marriott Rewards Visa (Chase) and Points

Postby yfan » Sat Aug 16, 2014 9:09 pm

I just got my Marriott Rewards Visa Signature, but Chase is a little skimpy on my credit limit ($5,700 when I have Amex and Discover cards with lines of $10K and $8.5K), with the intro offer of 70,000 points for $2K spend in the first 3 months. My question is, if I cancel the card after meeting the spend requirement and thus racking up those points, will I lose the points for canceling the card?

This is purely hypothetical at the moment, and only under consideration because of the annual fee that will hit in the second year. Another option I am considering is keeping it and canceling my Amazon Visa, also issued by Chase, the CL of which can presumably be transferred to the Marriott Rewards card. I am not asking if I *should* cancel the card, only if I do, whether I lose the points or they stay.

Read the fine print on the application, there is always something in there that says if you cancel that card within a certain time then the points will be revoked. I think, not for sure, that is Marriott card is six months. However, if you stay in Marriott properties then the annual fee is nothing because of the free night every year. This year I redeemed my free night certificate for stay that would have cost over $360.

From Chase's offer details:

If your account is not open for at least 6 months, Marriott and Chase reserve the right to deduct the bonus points from your Marriott Rewards account.

Thanks. I'll also be going over all the fine print that came with the card. 6 months is fine. The only time I might cancel is in time for the AF to hit.
