Freedom Mastercards being switched to Visas

Postby beef.stu » Wed Jul 09, 2014 4:58 am

I saw over on myfico that some members have received letters from Chase within the past month or so saying that their Mastercard Freedom cards will be replaced with Visa versions.

As a Freedom MC owner myself, I do not mind this switch and almost hope I get notice soon because imo the visa version looks slightly better.

So has anybody else received a notification from chase about this?

When I receive notification of the switch, I called and the CSR change mine early based on cardholder request; the mastercard was changed to the Visa Signature.

Many customers have not yet received any written notification from Chase (I found out about it on this forum months ago, and there are a few threads on this subject as well). Chase cannot tell these customers in advance WHEN the account will be changed (it is being done in batches). My World MasterCard account (dating back to 1974), is still a MasterCard. My problem is that I already have a "Freedom" Signature Visa account (1973), so I'll wind up with two Visas of the same type, but with different credit limits and APR's. Important reminder: IF you want a product change (I can have any kind of personal credit card they offer), they will NOT give you any of the deals a new account applicant would get (extra rewards points, etc.), and, if the card has a yearly fee (Sapphire Plus Card), you will pay the fee in full. That's it.

I wrote about it on this forum a while ago, if I remember correctly what the CSP representative told me is that all MasterCards issued by Chase will be changed to Visas by November 2014. This date may be incorrect, I did write the correct date I was told a long time ago in this forum. The representative also told me that they are slowly changing over customers since 2013. I found all this out when I asked for EMV in my World MasterCard, I was informed it was not available since Chase is ending their relationship with MasterCard.

I cancelled my Freedom Card, so I don't have to worry about it ...

Though its not a Freedom, my Chase Sapphire was already switched from a World Mastercard to a Visa Signature. Chase switched them about a month ago, I did receive notification in the mail ahead of time. After talking with a rep when I went to activate the new card, she stated that all Chase backed Mastercards would be undergoing this change by the end of this year. The exceptions being co-branded cards, such as the IHG World Mastercard (which ironically just got converted to a MC from a Visa).
Now she's eyeless.
