Help me get rid of my assistant

Postby jlam572 » Fri May 09, 2014 12:11 pm

Ok so Ive complained about her in a few threads before...and rather than always pull those threads off topic I figured I would start a new thread. Im looking for ideas on how to get rid of my assistant. Heres some background

-Im a Registered Nurse, but I have my own office I share with one other nurse and our annoying assistant. The office is rather large, but we use cubicles to keep some privacy.
-My assistant is in her early 40s
-Vietnamese
-LOUD
-union
-female
-ESL
-shrieking and irritating voice
-always complains about her job
-blows up in office (screams and yells a lot)
-personal phone calls on company time (appx 2-3 hrs a day)

I work with private practices and usually receive 20-30 phonecalls a day from them, which get routed through her. I have received SEVERAL complaints about her being rude to the physicians when they call in. Even the lady at starbucks wont make her drink because she is such a bitch.

Firing her is out of the question. My boss doesn't want to deal with the paperwork and her filing a claim of wrongful termination with the union or whatever...so question is...how can I make her quit?

Currently I am keeping a log of her time spent on these annoying personal conversations, oh did I mention that they are loud and in Vietnamese?

SRT8 has mentioned a few ideas on how to make her quit and cover my butt.
-work her to the point of quitting
-Make sure you time and date stamp the things she does which are offside.
-Try and put a real value to the cost of her behavior.

Any other advice would be appreciated. Please feel free to tell any story that might help me have peace in my office or make this thread more enjoyable...I really need a laugh because I hate this women so. :beat:

Step one, which Fast mentioned, is to learn the rules. Figure out exactly what sort of protections she has from the union, what she's allowed to do, what you're allowed to do. You never know - the solution to your problem may be less complicated than you think.

I'm Vietnamese and I'm kinda get offensive by this post. But whatever, everybody is different. I think work her up to quitting might create a hostile work environment. How about write her up for using work time on the phone for private matter? A few warnings to let her know that she might be terminated because of her behaviors will be appropriate.
All my posts are my opinions. All my posts mentioned "you" are merely for discussion-purpose only. No advice is given in any post at any time. It is also impossible for me to put effort to verify every statement that anyone has given.

I would have a "talk" with her. Let her know that her work is unprofessional and she needs to improve. Have you talked to her about her attitude? Have you called her out on using company time for personal phone calls? Since you are keeping a log, you can also tell her to hang up the phone because she is supposed to be working, not having personal calls. And if she doesn't listen (sounds like she probably won't), you can go to your boss's boss and recommend your assistant for termination and/or discipline due to incompetence and insolence.

And regarding your choice to mention her specific ethnicity so many times in your posts, if she had those personal, loud phone calls on company time in English, would you be annoyed still? I hope that you think she's annoying because she's loud and rude/she sucks and not because she's a specific ethnicity.

I've said it before... key is to document. Do everything as if you are going to have to go before a judge. The better your records are, the easier it would be to justify your actions.

Remember, it is sadly up to you to show their incompetence and their cost to your business. The lazy ass gal has to prove nothing more than you costing her job.

Try cutting off her calls by giving her urgent work to do. 'Urgent' work is easy to defend in your case. She can't make that determination. Even if it's menial, make it urgent. Keep interrupting her social calls. Let it go on for 5-10 mins then CUT her off. The trick is to make her get into it BEFORE you interrupt. That makes it annoying for her. Do this often. Do it consistently. Be relentless.. Have those that hate her do the same thing. Basically, interrupt her fun.

Time her breaks and lunch to a T. An hour is an hour. If she is late, let her know first verbally then officially by letter. Say this is going on file. BUT make sure you record the time and date. Make sure you have someone else verify. You don't want to be called on this. Use a company clock... use something that is beyond approach for accuracy.

Rude behavior is not tolerated. Let her know. Then formalize each occurrence. Build a case and make is so compelling that if her legal council comes forward, you let them see all the proof then present a termination option. Make it so compelling she takes the package and leaves.

good thoughts Fast........

as a manager I came up with some really good teachers and they all have the same thing to say like Fast does: when you are dealing with someone's livelyhood.....it pays to put the pen tip THROUGH the paper when dotting that "i". it took me 7 pages and hours after work over 6 months to properly document a team member that just would not get to work on time for anything. In the end......I ended up nailing two people.....the one coming in late.....and the manager that kept editing the late comer's time. when the time came for me to go to HR.....it was so open and shut.....they were waiting on him when he showed up for work........of course....he was late.

LOL. We should open a company which specifically deals with termination of pests.... I mean trouble employees.

Normally this would be easy to do. Employers do it all the time. Of course most of the time they don't have a union so they can just escort you to the door anytime they like. The union and any agreement complicates things so you need to find out what her rights are.

If you can cut her hours and make her part time that would be a start. Also, all bosses play this game, where their pets get the cherry assignments while the non-pets get the work no one wants. Give her that work, all of it.

Start "coaching" her and having weekly sessions on what she needs to improve and the progress or lack of it so it's documented what is going on. Frankly this probably should have been done from the get go but you can give her a break and a chance at first and if she just doesn't "get" it, make it more unpleasant.

If you have to truly get nasty, criticize her in front of the patients/customers. Be careful how you do this, you want to humiliate without giving her a way to legally attack you, so do not mention gender/race/age or anything of that nature, but there is no law against pointing out what an idiot someone is.

This is after all the US, workers have no rights whatsoever - most 3rd world countries give workers more rights than the US does so this can't be that hard. (And no I'm not kidding my ex-wife was from the 3rd world and she told me she was shocked to come here and find out her 3rd world country gave workers more rights than the US does).

Furthermore, crank up the artificial urgency - make EVERYTHING she does just absolutely vital to the future of humanity. We need more coffee made NOW or Rome will burn, the sky will fall and the world will DIE! You know just the usual insane rants and screaming from management.

I was thinking if you want to drive her out of there just behave like the management at my company does. That ought to do the trick. And the above is what they do continually. Also readjust her priorities on an hourly basis. Everything is a crisis and life and death but change crises hourly on her. As soon as she starts one task start screaming how this next one is more vital, then the next one, etc just repeat it all day long.

Hog the credit for whatever she manages to do right while blaming her for everything in the company that goes wrong whether she had anything to do with it or not - even the weather. It's all her fault, while you're the reason lunch was so delicious even though you didn't make it.

Bring in outside contractors and make it known they are the experts while she's a moron, and they are her boss. Let them screw everything up then blame her and make her fix it.

This is just standard stuff at my insane company, and I can tell you it works in terms of driving people out, as I'm looking myself and waiting to hear back about an interview this week. So I can tell you if you wanna lose people do like the lunatics here do it really works.
