Help me test Wells Fargo's concierge service...

Postby otter » Wed Apr 30, 2014 9:38 pm

Well I did what I said I wasn't going to do- I applied for the new Wells Fargo Amex. I figured 3.3 at gas stations (when I go over the $250 I use for Sallie Mae and my revolving 5% cards aren't doing gas) and 2.2% at restaurants (ditto the aforementioned revolvers) would be worth the $45 annual fee(waived the first year anyway). I had considered the "black card" but I don't fly often and it's pretty much the same as the Arrival for hotels- so can't justify the $175 fee.

Anyway, was approved but only for $2500. The analyst said it was largely because I already had a $4500 card with WF (which is pretty useless). She did say once the card comes in I could try to move the Visa's CL to the Amex and close the Visa. I'll go into a local branch where I am familiar with the people and hopefully I can do that. Interestingly enough, it seems like a lot of the perks that come with the card are administered through the Amex website- so it appears to be a little more than what one usually expects from a third party card. It's not simply a card which runs on the Amex network, although time will tell how useful it is...

Getting to the subject of this thread... I've never really had a card with concierge service (the closest I think I had to travel concierge service was back in the day when a First Premier Bank rep told me i could "go to hell"). Of course, I've heard all the stories... people calling up and asking what unique gift to buy their wife, people needing reservations at a restaurant which is already booked, etc. I do plan on going on vacation next month, but I want to test it out now. I'm not in a relationship right now so the gift thing won't work.

Anyone have any ideas? I don't even know what I can ask for... is any task too mundane for a concierge service to do? We've got some smart, creative people here... so give me your best!

Thanks in advance!

I've actually been using the Visa Signature concierge quite a bit. I find that they're most useful when you're looking to find a local place to buy a specific product that's not common- they can save you a lot of time by making the phone calls for you.

I've had them find me a hotel in a small town that takes dogs (and apparently doesn't get annoyed when they pee on that spot on the carpet where all the other dogs peed.) I actually pitted Visa Signature against Amex Platinum for that one. Visa was a bit faster. The front desk at the hotel admitted that they were curious why they got so many calls that night.

I wonder if they could help me with legal research...

I'm currently having AMEX concierge analyze the NFL schedule to see if any games line up in the same city and same weekend with a few select college football teams. Should be hearing from them Friday. This is a annual thing I've had them do for NFL and NBA schedules.

ive contacted my amex platinum concierge for things such as anniversary ideas, gift ideas, reservations, getting me on guest lists for clubs, sending flowers. Give them a challenge... most of the things that a concierge can do, you can do yourself on the internet for much cheaper...but its the big plans/options where you want that personal attention.

The call isn't long...if it was long, it wouldn't be worth the time. A call to them should be simple. "hi I need reservations for 2 tonight for a five star restaurant around 8-10pmish price range 100-200 a person." 30 second phone call and youre on with your day. They will call back with a reservation for you.
