Where do you guys buy your suits?

Postby Obi-dan » Tue Apr 08, 2014 4:42 pm

I was wondering where you guys buy your suits. I don't have to wear one very often any more so I don't buy that frequently. When I first got out of college and worked in a bank I had to buy several right away and so I go them at Men's Wearhouse. I've been happy with MW and when I do get a suit I usually get it from them but it seems like a lot of people hate MW. With the merger of MW and Jos. A. Bank the options are that much smaller so I was wondering where others go to get a reasonably priced suit.

I've done Mens Wearhouse in the past, but wouldn't go again. Off the rack suits really don't fit me well.

In other news, my post doesn't help you at all.

Bespoke.

Custom fit is best and IMO trumps a designer house label unless the designer does you a bespoke suit.

Bar III at Macys, is a really nice brand. Nice slim fit and really modern looking suits for a very reasonable price.

you really wanna know:

goodwill...and thrift stores...

I am short so anything.........ANYTHING........I buy has to be made to fit me.

I have lots of brooks brothers......and ralph lauren.....and i paid more for the alterations than I did the suit. my most expensive suit only cost me $30.00 and I needed $50 in alterations. but i look like friggin James Bond in it.

I have a friend whose mother is is Japanese an I am a little taller than her husband.....they have been married for 30 years....and she knew my size from day one.... I don't think i can replace her......

She uses me as a test fit for the raw suit when she shops for husband or son.....

Thanks for the advice guys. I think I am going to look for closely at something like indochino.com or another online bespoke purveyor or finally, look though vintage and seeing what a tailor would charge to get it into shape. And Macys has come up not just here but in a few different places. I will investigate further and give an update.

I got a Paul Dion suit from Goodwill for like $15 that fit me great. If you go to one in a nice area you have a good chance to find a more expensive suit that someone has donated. My sister's boyfriend is actually a suit salesman from some upscale place that goes around and fits people to order their suits. Supposedly when I graduate and need a suit he can get me one for a great price. Also since all the clothes are custom he can go to the factor employee store and get all of the clothes that were not bought for pennies on the dollar. Like real silk ties for $5.

I second this, sorta. I like a little edge to my style even when I am dressing up and Bar III has some nice stuff, but it is really hit/miss especially with fit. Express is ok. Banana Republic is ok too. What's great about BR is that when you have their card and become luxe (spending $800/yr) they offer free basic alterations. Lucky for me, they have a tailor on staff at my location and so I get free basic alterations, but also a great deal on more advanced alterations.

I am a 42R when it comes to blazers, so I can usually buy off the racks. Do you usually go for suits or are you ok with just sport coat/blazer?

Off topic, but since when did suit separates become so popular? I remember when buying suits meant pants came with the blazer lol.

I have to go to DXL for my clothing, including suits. DestinationXL has many good looking clothing and with coupons you might get a deal. They do alter them if need be too.
