I use Ally Bank as my primary bank account (have a Checking, Savings, and Money Market Savings with them) for over 2 years and its terrific. They have very good customer service for those times when you need, you don't have to hold for 10-30 minutes unlike other banks.
The ability to use ANY ATM for free (they rebate the ATM fees at the end of your statement) is super convenient and they do have free checks.

With that said, I do have an account with Chase so if I need to go to a physical bank to deposit something or whatever, I can. I just keep a little bit over the minimum $1500 Chase requires you have in a Checking account to avoid monthly fees.
