From the looks of things it seems like Sony just paid a lot of money to reviewers for its NEX products? I'm not too picky about video shooting, night pictures and price are definitely more important.

It may seem that way BUT despite what may 'seem' to be bought exposure, the camera does actually perform. I have not received payment from Sony to write this.... it's from personal experience and product use.

I had a Sony DSLR for a time, and it was quite good. I imagine their NEX cameras are decent, as well. You really can't go wrong with any brand today.

I agree with FastSRT8,

The NEX series are now performing really well, I also bought some extra sony lens and they are definitively helpful in pushing your photography skills forward.
For video sony is definitively a winner for me as they offer 1080p/60 and lower from the NEX5N.

I think I'll switch to a NEX7 soon as the lack of viewfinder can be annoying sometimes.
If you're into great pictures get a NEX5 series, if you know you're into photography then a NEX6 will give you more room to grow than a NEX5 in my opinion
