I always figured IT guys dressed like this? https://vimeo.com/66868465

when i work its almost always all black, black top, blazer/sweater and black skirt, but my shoes are black mouses :) its black on black version, not the studded version or anything of mbmj and with the black tights it kind of fades to background. observant people always notice and remark tho. simple jewelry that is unique, but not gaudy.

outside of work it depends on mood. i have a few pieces of flair like a second hand cdg skirt i absolutely love, a few dries van noten silk tops, a Y's snap black cami

hoodies, really good cotton plain tees, camis..i would get one in every colour thats flattering.

i mix everything from gap, anthropologie, jcrew to a few pieces i'm lucky to get from Y! japan auctions, NAP, ssense, theoutnet, etc.

no logos, no crazy patterns because I like to mix/match and wear my stuff for years and if I could afford it I would get everything in cashmere/wool but since cotton is just as good, yeah.

Most of my suits I buy at Joseph A Banks or The men's warehouse. The only two suits that I spent any real money on were the Armani's. Those Italian cut suits fit and look great even before they are tailored perfectly for you. You can get a nice suit for $250. But an Armani will run you $2,500-$10,000. I only wear them on the most special of occasions like I did last Friday night for my 15th wedding anniversary. My kids took a few shots of mom and dad just before we went to downtown Houston to party all night long.

I don't own a suit or even a tie. I'm in IT. I consider myself "nerd lite" in that I don't have glasses with tape on them or a pocket protector or high water pants, but still am a nerd as it's pretty much a requirement of being in this business. As you climb the ladder on the scale of nerd-dom, you start to move up the chain a bit like adding suspenders - if you see a nerd in suspenders you know he's probably got one of the bigger cubes to signify his senior nerd status, or he's just one of those throw back types.

Personally I love it when you can wear jeans year round they are so much more comfortable than business casual. But corporations, or most of them value control and conformity much more than productivity - if that wasn't true, we wouldn't have a fraction of the time wasting meetings we have. And during the course of 2013, I for one can say that only a handful of all the meetings haven't been a waste of time. They even know that, and still waste our time anyway (while wondering why nothing gets done) but that's another topic! Anyway I'm very much Mr. Nerd Casual.

I work in IT as well for a big University (35,000+ students).
I don't have to interact with neither students nor professors, since I work with computers and servers, so most of the time my dress code is jeans, converse, and a hoodie.

jumbo I envy you for that. We have to wear business casual except on Fridays, when we can wear jeans and a Hawaiian shirt if we want to :)

Hahaha! Not exactly. She's a Registered nurse. And I'm a CNC programmer/Machinist/Supervisor/Owners whipping boy/Steel toe boot wearing first one there. Last one to leave guy. Sometimes When I come home I smell like coolant and have steel shavings on my shirt and in my hair. So suit's for me are only worn outside of my job. Levis 501 jeans and a Megadeth T-shirt are my work apparel. But I love my trade.
