Would like a hookah

Postby agp » Wed Jul 25, 2012 9:59 am

Not sure what I got into me but I recently took an interest in the Middle East and everything that even remotely has to do with the Middle East. For those with knoweldge in the field, can you recommend me a hookah? And what things I need to go along with it?

If you haven't already, I would go to a restaurant or other establishment where you can smoke one and talk with someone knowledgable. Where I live there's a place down the street, but that might not be the case in your town.
American Express: Blue Cash Preferred (groceries, 6%; gas, department store, 3%); Gold Delta SkyMiles (Delta Air Lines, 2 miles/dollar, free checked bag).
US Bank: Cash+ (utilities, phone, internet, restaurant, 5%; drugstores, 2%).
FIA Card Services: Fidelity Amex (everything, 2%); Fidelity Visa (everything, 1.5%).
Chase: Freedom (rotating, 5%); Amazon (Amazon.com, 3%); PriorityClub (IHG hotels, 5 points/dollar); Sapphire (not in use).

*All cards are registered with PriorityClub IDine program for 8 points/dollar at participating restaurants.

Agp, aren't you in Jersey? Thought I read that in some post. I don't know where you are but there was a hookah bar we used to go to maybe 5 years ago in the town of Fords (is near the Brunswicks). It's called Fire and Ice, they were pretty decent and not terribly pricey. The "fire" part was downstairs and you could order whatever kind of hookah you wanted and they'd bring it to wherever you were sitting. The "ice" part upstairs was more of a club though. If that's fairly close to you, there might be people that could help you out there, and it was always a great experience. Sorry I'm not more help, it's been a while since I smoked from a hookah and I was never patient enough to set it up when friends and I did.

Yea I live in north Jersey, with NYC in my backyard. I have been to a few hookah bars but I never had the chance talk too much with the staff because the places were packed when I went. The places I went to charged ~20-25$ for a hookah (is that the norm?), the price is not much but it does add up over time.

hookah is a fun way to smoke and its variety and culture are certainly interesting at the least, but please keep in mind that, even though it's smoke is less dense and toxic due to water filtration and other factors, the increased rate of inhalation and volume of smoke inhaled (or just simply "tasted" in one's mouth) is much greater than the amount of smoking a cigarette and even to some degree "chain" smoking.

Unless you are a serious smoker I would caution long use and suggest you be as careful with it as you are with your credit rating. Your lungs recover at a similar rate at best ;) anyways a good hookah runs 300+ and pipes such as narghiles and mu'essel are some of the most sought after. Also avoid ebay at all cost and look around hookah forums or local hookah bars or smoke shops carry what you are looking for.

Keep in mind there is a huge knock off market and spending good money on something for shoddy plastics and inferior glass can really ruin a good time when it clogs/breaks/sucks. So enjoy, in moderation, and good luck to you on your search and on your enlightenment of middle eastern culture. take their religion with a grain of salt and don't tread on the cows too ;)
