It pays to ask

Postby DoingHomework » Wed May 02, 2012 10:54 pm

So, I'm not telling which card or even companies this is for...

I have this old credit card that I used to use as my primary card until about a year ago. Since then I use my AMEX platinum. The thing is the bank has not offered this card for several years but did not take it away from me. They have tried to get me to switch to the new version (it's a partnership with an airline) for at least 2 years but the offer was not compelling enough.

Purely by coincidence I noticed the other night that the same bank offers a card with the same airline that gives some very interesting perks. I wrote to them and said basically, "gee, I have a card that you no longer offer. I'd take this new card but the fee is higher than what I have. I haven't been using my card because AMEX offers better points. And if I change I'll have to redo all my automatic payments and take a hard inquiry."

I got an answer back that said "We will change you to the new card with no credit inquiry and you can keep your existing account number. You will keep your same annual fee until January 2013."

Wow! So my response was..."but will you just raise the annual fee after a year?"

"No," they said. "Your annual fee will stay what it is for 3 years. After that it will be the current fee on that card"

"Yes" I almost screamed into the keyboard.

This is for a pretty awesome card if you fly. On one particular airline the perks beat the platinum card. I have never once seen it advertised anywhere. I stumbled upon it on a bank web site and just happen to have an old card with the same bank that I used to have high spend on. I am getting it for significantly less than the posted rate for 3 years! And frankly, I'd pay the higher fee for the perks even now! The fee is not that high.

This could be the biggest secret around. I will be interested to see if they start advertising it.

So you posted your story to tell everyone you have this amazing card, which no one can verify, and you're not going to tell us what it is. And if it is a secret, then they won't advertise it. Ever see a Centurion commercial or advertisement?

Yep. That's about it. I'm not sure why they are not promoting it but I don't want to do anything to muck up the deal I got.

I don't really care if anyone believes me. I'll still enjoy the benefits. My main point is that sometimes yu can get a great deal just by asking.
