So what's everyone paying for gas per gallon?

Postby Money card » Thu Mar 08, 2012 9:59 pm

Since everyone lives in different areas, gas prices vary by area, what's everyone paying per gallon?

Does anybody get gas at Costco? (And do all Costcos have gas stations?) For anybody who gets gas there do you use their credit card, a debit card, or another Amex?

For anybody who goes to a regular gas station do you use their private card example
Exxon/Mobil, Citgo, Sunoco or Shell? Does it have the Mastercard logo?

Has anybody been using a Discover card open road or the More card? or has anybody been using a bank credit card like Bank of americas cash back card?

In New Jersey area where I'm about 10 minutes or so away, gas has been going for about
anywhere from 3.53 up to 3.65, Citgo last week was about 3.50, Shell I think I saw for about 3.55 Exxon/Mobil is 3.59 per gallon. Now that I have 2 cards I alternate between my Exxon/Mobil and Citgo. Both formats are the gas stations cards. I have no mastercard version or visa under the gas cards.

In New York gas is going for about 3.99 up to 4.10.

I use diesel, gas is around $3.75 and diesel around $4.05. I use walmart gift card $.03 off and get diesel there. I don't have a card that has anything special for gas discounts. For gas, I go to Sam's

Yesterday I went to refill my car's gas tank... around $4.50 per gallon... that is the 91 Octane gas.

The card I use for gas refilling is my AMEX Platinum. Until April 15 (not sure until when), AMEX gives 3x points on gas purchases at Chevron. So I have been going there for the past weeks.

If there is no promotion, my gas station is Shell for their V-Power. Chevron is my second gas station. Shell has been tempting me to apply for their Shell credit card but have yet to apply. hehe... Do you guys think I should apply for it since Shell is my main gas station anyways?

Everyone forgot to mention which grade those gas prices are so I assume everyone is buying the regular grade gas.

You're correct it's 3.59 on regular gas with my Exxon/Mobil charge card. Is the shell card a credit card with a Mastercard or Visa logo? Or is it the charge card that you can only use at the gas stations?

I will assume you don't live near any Costco or you don't want to do business with them?

Do you have a Discover open road card? when you go to chevron I understand you use your platinum card, what do you use when you go to shell?

According to Shell's website, those are credit cards offered thru Citi bank. Shell Drive for Five card has no annual fee. Shell Select Member card has $25.00 annual fee. But the picture of those cards on the website does not show any Visa nor Mastercard logo. I have read somewhere, not sure if here in this forum or not, that some companies use the words credit cards and charge cards interchangeably.

I live near Costco but don't know if there gas are any good.

Discover sent me a pre-approval (not the pre-qualified one) letter in the mail before. But when I applied Discover rejected my application. Since then I avoid Discover cards.

I use my platinum doing transaction with Shell.

Well what I would say is the Shell station, do they have the same prices for cash as for credit? Where my dad goes to Hess credit is the same price as cash. but other gas stations, cash is from 3.53 to 3.59 while credit is from 3.63 to 3.69 depending upon the gas station.

What I would say is if you are not being charged any extra for using your credit card I would continue to use your platinum card.

if at shell the price is 3.65 for cash price and 3.75 for credit, this is what I would do I would apply for the shell card.

it sounds like the card is a charge card you can only use at the gas station. don't apply for the card that has an annual fee of 25.00. get the no annual fee card, remember this is a shell charge card not an American express zync card.

when you look at a credit report some people have 2 macy's cards. 1 is the store card and the other 1 is the American express card. they both go on a report as Macys. same as if you have a wal mart card or wal mart Discover, the wal mart card and Discover both report on a credit report under wal mart, not walmart Discover or even Discover.

the difference is those stores make money because you are using the card. however when you use your Discover to purchase something at evelyn and crabtree or american express at J crew you get rewarded plus the stores have to go through the major financial companies and a certain percentage is taken out. so those cards like Brooks brothers mastercard, ll bean visa, Nordstrom visa, Macy's american express and walmart Discover are credit cards.

While the cards without the logo that you can only use in the store like kohls, Jc penny, Lord &taylor, Banana republic, express, etc. those cards that you can only use in the store, outlet or online so we call them charge cards. from the mastercard version to the store version the par is the same from 24.99 to 29.99 the only difference is the acceptance so we call them visa or mastercard version credit card, the store version charge card.

it works the same way as with gas. if your shell has a mastercard logo on it you would be charged the same gas price as if you used a chase or citibank mastercard credit card. but if you get the gas card you would get charged the cash price, the gas cards go on the credit report the same as the stores, the only difference is when you buy gas the shell mastercard charges extra, but you get coupons or a credit on your statement. where if you have a macys american express you need to bring your coupons, unless the store has coupons but you pay the same amount of purchase whether you use your macys store or american express.

I filled up in Portland, OR; Los Angeles, CA; and Richmond, VA in the past 3 days and can assure you gas prices are widely variable. $3.89 for 87 octane in Portland, $4.21 just outside Van Nuys in Los Angeles County, and $3.59 in Richmond.

Again, that is all 87 octane, which I only use in rental cars. So I am hit with the bigger gas bills at home (Richmond).

I utilize my American Express Blue Cash Preferred where American Express is accepted for gas, and my JPMorgan Palladium (3% Cash back on gas) if I can not use AmEx.

$10.44 in Scotland for diesel per gallon and it can only go up, now there's talk regarding petrol tanker delivery strike action, price will go again. huge taxes are added to our fuel.
