Lounges and IDs

Postby CarefulBuilder14 » Thu Oct 20, 2016 1:23 am

This might be a FT question, but I wasn't sure where to ask it (or seek an old thread about it) there.

Hypothetically, let's say I bring a semi-responsible, slightly-under-21 year old relative into a domestic airport lounge as my guest. He shows his VALID driver's license to enter, along with his boarding pass. The lounge serves alcohol.

Treating him as an adult, I don't babysit him. He eventually wanders over to the bar and tries to get a drink. If he's asked for ID, he might try to use a FAKE driver's license that says he's 21.

How bad could things get? Advice?

Interesting question. I doubt the airport lounge bartenders are closely monitored by police. As long as the customer is not wearing a pilot's uniform, they would probably pay little attention to the person's ID and serve the drink. I would not be too worried.

Is this something you know he's done before? If so, and he is aware that you know this about him, it might be worth just briefly mentioning, like, "Look, you're an adult and you'll do what you want, but when I use my access to this lounge to get you in, please don't do anything that will get me in trouble." If it's just a hypothetical scenario, and you have no idea if he'd actually try to pull this off, I probably wouldn't say anything. If it happens and things escalate, it's not like you tried to buy him alcohol. If it got ugly, presumably this person's real, valid ID and fake ID would both be discovered.

I don't know if he's done it before, but I know one of his friends has, and it got me thinking. Maybe a very gentle and vague warning, but nothing more.

Besides, lounges are small, and he'd know it's always possible I could be watching... :ppp

That's true. It really depends on your relationship with him, but I'm sure there is a casual way to just gently mention it that wouldn't be a big deal to him.

I never drank underage when I was younger, but I still look quite young and have been to a few lounges who did not ID me which I liked since my picture is god awful and I look 12. I agree with the others that it is not worth you getting in trouble. Let him wait to drink till he is back home with friends.
