An unpleasant hotel thought

Postby CarefulBuilder14 » Sun Sep 25, 2016 12:47 am

Hotels often have glasses and/or sealed disposable plastic cups for water. I've tended to use whichever I saw first.

But, as someone on FT pointed out, when was the last time you saw a housekeeping cart with clean glasses? Those glasses must go for ages between proper sanitary washings.

Plastic cups for me from now on.

Or do those carts often have some hidden compartment?

Probably depends on the hotel, but I imagine a lot of things so without even being wiped down for very very very long times. The phone is probably one of the grossest things in a hotel. The door knobs. The comforter. All of that shit is most likely filthy even in the nicest hotels - I could be wrong. My cousin was the head of housekeeping in a very high end Ritz for a while, maybe I'll ask him explicitly and see what he says...

The hotel I used to work at in Puerto Rico had glasses in the rooms, and after every departure, the housekeeper would remove them and place them on his or her cart. They would then take those used glasses and drop them off in the kitchen to be washed. Not every glass was removed from the rooms. Only those that "were used or dirty". The housekeeping inspector (or executive housekeeper) would then stock his or her cart with some newly washed and dried glasses to be placed in the rooms after each room is inspected. Sometimes the inspector would remove additional glasses from the rooms if they thought those weren't as clean as previously thought, replacing each accordingly.

I do not use the glasses in hotel rooms. I am comfortable using the individually wrapped cups.

I also never use the glasses when I travel. The same for the in-room coffee machine. I don't know if that thing is ever cleaned or what the last person did with it.

And how long ago was the coffee ground? Even if sanitary, it would probably be old and disgusting.

I don't use the glasses, wrapped cups and coffee maker. I just buy bottled water, drink soda from
the can and take my happy a** to the lobby and find coffee there.

I also keep my shoes or slippers on when walking around the hotel room. It's not like they shampoo or steam vac the carpet after every guest.

Man, I never thought about ANY of this stuff. I use the cups, I walk around barefoot. And now I'm thinking maybe I'm just a dirty person.

I've had good experiences with the Marriott. Very clean rooms, bed sheets, bed, towels, floor, surfaces, etc. This one Marriott hotel I stayed at, I still remember how good the shower was, it was like a downpour. One of the best showers I've ever had.

An independent rural motel I stayed at last night didn't even bother with glasses or plastic cups since the tap water wasn't very good.

The room was at least clean, and the keurig cups hadn't expired (though I had to go to a cafe to get a real breakfast).

A HI/HIX would have been nicer, but far less convenient.
