I hadn't heard much about them at all, but that would be a legitimate concern if true.

No direct experience, I just thought I would bring it up since I had seriously considered it myself, too, but the local bank I used in college is better for me (I get 1.99% APR on checking, so as long as I keep enough money in it I'd get more in interest than I would with Discover's cash back). I should consider their savings accounts more seriously, though.

Wow 1.99% is great. My Barclay savings account only gives me 1.05%.

I tried Discover in the past and just did not like it. The quality is not the same as their CC side. I had trouble even getting my debit card since it took them several months to finally get it to me. I could tell a difference in their customer service as well. Love my Discover CC, but hated their bank account.
Discover IT - $5,700
Chase Freedom - $5,700
Costco Citi - $13,000
Sallie Mae - $4,000
Chase Sapphire Preferred - $6,000
Chase Sapphire Reserve - $19,500
Citi Double Cash - $6,500
Amex BCE - $13,000

FICOs: Discover (777), SallieMae (764), Amex (767), Citi (772)
FAKOs: CK- TU (760), EQ (760)

I love it. It is a local bank from when I was in college, but I liked them so much I kept the checking and savings accounts I had with them after moving. I have another checking account with a local bank here (just to have access to a retail branch of a bank I use in case I ever needed it), but with direct deposit and mobile deposits it's never been an issue. You do have to do a lot to get the full 1.99% each billing cycle to ensure you actually use it as a checking account (12 debit card transactions, 1 ACH payment or direct deposit, etc.), but it is worth it to me.

Sorry to hear that about Discover's checking. It might be tolerable with a savings account, but I can easily see not wanting to put up with all that for a checking account! Hopefully you find something that suits your needs soon.
