nismo is correct. They implemented all the software specifics in the iPad to the iPhone 6+. They are literally all the same devices with different screen sizes, with the exception of the regular 6.

There is absolutely no benefit to having both unless you want the full-size iPad and even then, most iPhone 6+ people I've talked to feel no need to have an iPad at all anymore.

The mini doesn't have a speaker on the front panel that lets you hold it up to your skull like a phone. The mini does not have NFC. The mini still has a 4:3 screen ratio. The mini has the chip from the iPhone 5s, not the latest A8/M8. The mini does not have the new camera with optical image stabilization. It doesn't support 802.11ac wifi. I'm sure there are other differences.

A lot of people have wondered why Apple waited so long to come out with a truly competitive phone size and I think that's the reason. They wanted people to buy both an iPhone AND an iPad. Now that they've made their countless billions from the iPad and it is somewhat of an entrenched standard, they felt safe to bring out the iPhone 6 plus.

Exactly. I just had one of my family members say the same thing. Got a 6+ and no longer wants the iPad mini retina they already have. Definitely cannibalizing and they've been saying the iPad market has been dying for a while now.
