Getting the most credit card rewards when buying iPhone 6

Postby djrez4 » Tue Sep 16, 2014 10:04 am

  • Option 1 - Buy through cell provider with Chase Ink, purchase Applecare separately (requires trip to Apple Store - not convenient at all), earn 5 points per $. About 2100 UR points, 2 years Apple warranty with accident coverage, 1 year Visa warranty.
  • Option 2 - Buy through Apple (via UR Mall) with Platinum, purchase Applecare simultaneously, earn 1 MR and 1 UR per dollar. About 425 MR and 425 UR, 2 years Apple warranty with accident coverage, 1 year Amex warranty
  • Option 3 - Buy through cell provider with Chase Ink, rely on Visa Signature extended warranty, earn 5 points per $. About 1600 UR points, 1 year Apple warranty, 1 year Visa warranty.
  • EDIT Option 4 - Buy through Apple (via United MileagePlus Mall) with Platinum, purchase Applecare simultaneously, earn 1 MR and 1 UR per dollar. About 425 MR and 425 UA, plus 1000 UA bonus, 2 years Apple warranty with accident coverage, 1 year Amex warranty

Option 3 is only on the list because it's a royal pain to get to an Apple Store from my house. I have to make a trip to the Apple Store to get my iPhone 5 battery replaced anyway(recall, so free), so it really boils down to the points value vs. the quality of Amex's warranty extension vs. Visa's in deciding between Options 1 and 2. Help me decide if Amex coverage is worth giving up 1250 UR points.

My initial thought - 1250 UR points is $12.50 cash value. Amex is more than $12.50 better than Visa.

EDIT - just remembered the United bonus this week. That may tip things. It shrinks the difference to about 250 points. Option 4 is looking like the best bet.

It appears that United is specifically excluding iPhone6 presales from the Mileage Plus mall, just like Discover. However, they don't seem to be excluding it from the 1000 mile bonus. That changes the metric a bit, but not enough to alter the math for me.

UR Mall, AAdvantage Mall, etc. are also excluding iPhone 6 presales from their earning.
