I think we live in "Idiocracy"

Postby MemberSince99 » Tue Aug 19, 2014 2:10 pm

I had asked about GAP insurance for a vehicle I just bought - not the Challenger which already has that but a Durango I purchased (used 2008) as a winter vehicle. I figure an SUV with 4WD is just the ticket.

My insurance company who shall remain nameless to protect their idiocy replied they do not offer this coverage, EXCEPT if you get the loan through their bank. Ok, that's all well and good no problem, but the kicker is they then informed me that they had cancelled my renters insurance policy as of 7/16, without notifying me of the cancellation previously or even asking if I wanted it cancelled. Why did they do this? Because earlier this month, as part of the conditions of a mortgage loan I'm required to get homeowners insurance (as EVERYONE getting a mortgage is) and so they took it upon themselves to assume I no longer needed the renters insurance, and cancelled retroactively.

I kid you not. Dumbest People On Earth.

First of all, just because I need coverage in effect starting on 9/5, why would you just cancel the policy effective mid July? (Or even cancel it at all???). The agent said yes that's wrong we should have cancelled it 9/5. I was like why don't you guys let me do my own thinking here because you guys are kind of sucking at it - why would you ASSUME I'm going to be moving on the day of my closing and get all moved in on that day? Realistically it would be a weekend thing anyway, and I plan to have a few things done before I move. So you assuming anything is just flat out incorrect.

She responds well we sent you a check for 26 dollars so now we need to bill you again for the insurance which I've re-instated.

I ended by saying if I want to cancel a policy I'm not too shy to tell you and I know the number please do not assume that you should do my thinking for me in the future.

Jesus, what a bunch of nitwits. So had the apartment burned down I would have assumed I was covered, only to contact them and be told I'm not covered, but told not to spend that 26 dollars all in one place to replace my stuff. Very nice.

Maybe this is a sign I need to see what other companies can do for me or are they all this incompetent?

I would say some, At work I deal with peoples problems. I see that some companies make a big deal about stuff while others help them right away even if its the customers fault. Good luck!

I often read posts on here and think bad things of the poster. In this case, you're right...your insurance company is full of morons. There is nothing about buying a house/taking out a mortgage that should automatically cause an assumption you are no longer renting. That's just plain idiotic.

She told me they made a "mistake" (her words). Uh, gee, ya think?

Just more to push me to be sure to check out the competition when renewal time comes. Even if it's more money so long as it's within reason, I feel like I need to get away from these bozos.

On the other hand who's to stay the competition isn't even worse? It's a crapshoot, but these guys have proven to be so bad that I don't have much to lose really by trying.
