Thread: HHGREGG help?

GE Bank can be shady with promotions. While I don't have personal experience with the HH Gregg Card, they screwed me on the Walmart Discover for the same exact thing. I applied online and got approved and there was an promo where you spend $100 on the first day of getting approved and you get $20 back. I mainly got the card for the free TU score, but I figured I'd take advantage of the promo and tried to buy a soundbar for my TV on their website, using the temporary card number. They gave me the same "credit card processing failed" message you got. I tried to see if Walmart could help me, but of course they bounced my issue to GE Bank. GE Bank said they were unable to verify my phone number or something and so they blocked the transaction and once they verified it a few days later (they said I had to receive the card first to get the security code on the back before they'd unblock the card), they said it was no longer the day I opened the account and they refused to honor their promotion. I pointed out that this was false advertisement and talked to two CSRs and a "supervisor" but no one would budge and I was really pissed off. I can assure you that that Walmart Discover is only going to get very minimal purchases to keep it open for my free FICO, and for the $20-$60 free cash advances you can get at the register and that's IT. Bastards.

I don't know for sure, but I would assume the card has to be activated when it arrives for security purposes.

To be honest, it's a good thing that they require activation otherwise, the card could get lost/stolen in transit and someone could start using it without you even realizing. Sure you wouldn't be liable, but at the same time it sounds like it would be a hassle to report the fraudulent charges with GE Bank and things could go awry pretty quickly.

Afterlife, Although it may hinder your purchase for a few days or a week, you probably just need to wait for the card to arrive to use it.

hematino, that sucks! It sounds like they really went out of their way to screw people over, especially by providing a temporary card number and everything. One would certainly believe that would be specifically used to make a purchase the first day for the promo... Thanks for the heads up to avoid GE Bank at all cost. Unfortunately, I did just establish Care Credit with them to cover a Vet bill, so we'll see.

Thanks man, yeah I hope you have better luck with them for your care credit than I did! I also have a Paypal Smart Connect line of credit through them. They're good about auto CLIs, and I've had nice customer service people with the Paypal account. I just won't hold my breath ever again with regard to them sticking to their advertised promotions.
