Which credit cards does Costco accept?

Where you can talk about store credit cards, like gas station cards, department store cards, etc.

Which credit cards does Costco accept?

Postby confused-shopper » Mon Aug 19, 2013 3:12 pm

Can someone tell me which credit cards does Costco accept? Do they accept cards other than the American Express Costco credit card? What about debit? I know many places don't take credit cards but they do accept Mastercard and Visa debit cards. I was there with my sister and was under the impression they only accept American Express. Can someone tell me if this is true and if it is true how is that legal? I thought there were antitrust laws that prevented a single credit card company from monopolizing the market?

Thanks in advance.

Inside the store, they accept Amex (any) and Costco cash cards, although many also have an ATM for cash withdrawals. You can also pay with cash and check.

The Costco in Van Nuys California that I went to in the past didn't accept debit- only Amex credit cards. But yea that was a long time ago so as DGenerateKane said it sounds like they take debit now.

I don't think the Costco/American Express marriage is going to change anytime soon.

Here's the info for the Costco credit card

They can accept whoever they choose to. The store pays a transaction fee for certain cards. Each network puts additional limitations on the merchant as more cards are used (VISA doesn't allow surcharges for credit cards, Discover doesn't allow surcharges if VISA is also accepted). I suspect this also has something to do with how much they can charge a merchant too (i.e. reward cards cost merchants more).
Amex BCE: $8200 | Discover: $5300 | Target: $1100 | BoA Rewards: $2600 | Chase Freedom $3700 | Chase Slate $2500

Costco accepts any American Express card (Costco TruEarnings or otherwise). They also accept AMEX Serve (prepaid card). Debit cards with Visa/MC are accepted as well (you will need to process it as a PIN based transaction). Of course cash!

There's nothing illegal about this at all. And there's no anti-trust violation. A RETAILER can choose to accept one card, multiple cards, or no cards at all. The card company is not involved in any sort of monopoly in such a circumstance. Back in the day, Discover card had an exclusive relationship with Sears (since it was a division of Sears back then), and more recently, Discover has had a relationship with Sam's Club; for a while, they didn't accept anything but Discover. It's all a matter of what a retailer is willing to tolerate as far as swipe fees are concerned; hence the reason many retailers don't accept AMEX.

PS -- I know this is an older thread!
