Default Has the Shopko credit card been discontinued?

I went to the official site for the Shopko credit card at www.myshopkorewards.com and the screen says 'Thank you for your interest in a my Shopko rewards Visa card. Unfortunately, this offer has expired.' Would this be a technical glitch or is Shopko no longer offering the Visa credit card?

The funny thing is that I could have sworn the last time I saw my sister this past summer she was still using her Shopko card. Does anyone know what's going on?

    Thanks,
    Mernie

It appears the Shopko-branded Visa card was offered by Barclaycard, the credit card division of Barclays. I guess you saw the same Barclays page that I did when I Googled the card. It's a safe bet they aren't opening any new accounts. Existing accounts, like your sister's, may still be active and may stay that way.

I gathered from another credit card site that says "fair" credit is needed for a Shopko card that their target clients might represent a somewhat higher than average credit risk. I am not suggesting this is true of yourself or your sister. However, the bank may be trying to reshape the risk profile of its credit card portfolio by discontinuing new accounts for this store's shoppers.

Something similar happened to me around the time of the financial meltdown. I had a Mattress Firm-branded Visa card from Wells Fargo. I was paying off a no-interest offer as agreed with no missed/late or otherwise insufficient payments. The bank informed me that they were closing the account and that I should just continue paying under the previously agreed terms. I suspect they did this because they were worried that consumers using no-interest store credit lines -- such as myself at the time -- were more likely to default.

Thank you so much for replying I couldn't figure out if it was a glitch or not. What would fair credit be, like average? That would be my sister she has mostly good credit but an ER bill that went to collections. It was for almost 30,000 for only being in the hospital overnight and there was no way she could pay it. Do you think the Shopko credit card will come back with the economy improving?

I really have no idea whether the card will come back, but I wouldn't hold my breath. You might try calling the store's corporate office and asking them. I think you would probably be better off getting a non-store-branded card. You should shop around for the lowest interest rate you can find if you're someone who carries a balance. If you don't carry a balance, look at rewards cards.

$30k for an overnight stay at the hospital? I bet that was more painful and made her feel more sick than whatever she went in there for.

jeffysdad is right on what he said about store cards. A lot of them have been pulled from the market because they were geared towards those with lower credit and as you can imagine that became a problem during the recession.

What made you want the Shopko credit card in the first place? Few store cards have good benefits.

Default Shopko credit card full story

Sry for bringing up an old thread but i bumped onto this by accident while surfing
but i do have the full answer.

When the shopko credit card first came out it had only been out for just under a year before the corporate offices decided to postpone any new issues of the card because at that time that was when congress was going through an overhaul of the credit card regulations and as such the company (shopko) being new to the credit card business decided to just postpone until things settled down. People with existing cards may still use them and they are valid.

I'm actually surprised we havn't lifted the temporary ban at the moment but i believe now that since the cards should only be valid for 2 years when they were issued that the corporate office is actually waiting until 2 years after the postponement date to start a new one with the new regulations.

This is just speculation on my part but it would make sense since the card wasn't offered for very long due to new regulations being put into place and will be less of a headache to deal if the rewards for the card are changed in the future. Thus the company will avoid negative feedback from current customers with the card and having their rewards changed as they always do their best to make it right with their customers.

Hope this was helpful to anyone that wanted the info and I am a lil surprised they didn't make the announcement on the website back when they postponed new apps for it.
