Safeway credit card in 2013?

Postby jwillis » Mon Apr 29, 2013 12:54 pm

Does anyone know where I can find info about the Safeway credit card? It's not on there website and when I google it I am having a hard time finding recent (2013) info about it.

The reason I ask is I'm looking for a way to save at the supermarket. My family and I spend an average of at least $500 per month at Safeway stores. I remember they used to have a credit card (at least I'm pretty confident of it) that gave extra points when shopping at their stores.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

If you have excellent credit, you're much better off with the Amex Blue Cash Everyday (no annual fee), or Preferred version ($75 annual fee), as they offer 3% and 6% cashback, respectively, on pretty much all grocery stores.

Add in their cashback tiers for other categories (ie. gas, department stores) and the fact that it's not a store card, and it's a no-brainer.
AMEX: PRG Gold, Business Simply Cash, Business Costco, BCE.
Chase: United MileagePlus Club, Sapphire Preferred, Amazon Rewards
Barclaycard Arrival World Mastercard
HSBC Cash or Fly World Mastercard
USAA World Mastercard, USAA Platinum Mastercard
Wells Fargo Business Platinum
USC Credit Union Mastercard

This is interesting. I was not even aware they had one. Are you sure it's not their club card? That's a free issue to get discounts at the checkout.

As Z06Biker said, I would highly recommend the Blue Cash Preferred if you spend close to $500/mo on groceries. They have a cap of $6000 in purchases per calender year in rewards for groceries, so that would fit you perfectly. It has a $75 annual fee, but it could be worth it with the rewards you'll get out of it and perks they throw every now and then. Benefits are great too.

To my knowledge Safeway NEVER had any credit card, only its club card.
In My Wallet:
Citi Forward (12/2010) | Citi TY Preferred (05/2011) | Chase Freedom (11/2011) | GECRB/PayPal (05/2012)
Discover it (07/2012) | AMEX BCP (09/2012) | TD/Target REDCard (10/2012) | Chase Ink Classic (11/2012)
BofA BBR (04/2013) | FNBO/Overstock.com (02/2014) | Barclaycard Arrival (04/2014) | FIA/Fidelity AMEX (04/2014)

Which would make sense, since pretty much every big grocery chain has a loyalty discount card, but none have a credit card.

Yeah I think OP is confusing the "credit" card with its club card. The club card doesn't give you extra points for shopping there, it just gives you the member price.
AMEX BCE ($20,000), Citi Forward ($6,800), Discover IT ($5,250), BoA Travel Rewards ($1,800)

AND on top of that... the club card doesn't really collect points either. It just gives you a member price at the checkout. I have a safeway club card for a number of years now and there is no points accumulated.

The card however is good North American wide.
