Kroger Prepaid Debit Card: What The Hidden Fees Are

Postby tylerzdebit » Thu Feb 23, 2012 4:45 pm

What do you know about the Kroger Prepaid Visa debit card and the fees that are charged for having it?

I bought it for a one-time use for online gaming and have already used up the money on the card, but am concerned I might be billed fees for having the account.

if it's a debit card and kroger doesn't have a bank. you need to give them your checking account.

why would you want to pay any unnecessary fees. just use your bank debit card. if it's a 1 time prepaid card it sounds more like a gift card.

If the card is a "Personalized" card with your name on it, then there is a $3 monthly fee. Cash reload fee is $3; however direct deposit is free. $1 per month if you want a paper statement. If you just got the temporary card then you should call to make sure that the account is closed as they charge a $2 inactivity fee after 13 months of no usage. Not sure how they track that (identifying that you own the card) unless they only impose the fee if there is money left on the account.

Here is a link to their fees:

I understand that you only purchased this for online gaming but isn't this sad that some people who can't get bank accounts go with cards like this? Yikes.

I have bad credit, equifax credit score of 596 and I use a prepaid mastercard through Walmart for my spending needs usually. I don't have a checking account because my checking account was in the red even after I paid off the balance with a few dollars to spare... They went ahead and charged me a $29 fee anyway so it went into the red again and I refused to pay it again. They would have done the same thing over and over so I gave up.

So I am in chexsystems for a few more years because of it. I can't work for a living so I live with my parents who support me financially. They give me money to spend occasionally and we put it on my walmart prepaid debit card. But now that I have a secured credit card I am going to close the prepaid debit card.
