Walmart rejects my card after more than 12 years.

Where you can talk about store credit cards, like gas station cards, department store cards, etc.

Walmart rejects my card after more than 12 years.

Postby Danielmx » Thu Aug 20, 2015 11:25 am

I have a Walmart credit card, that was obtained about 12 years ago when visiting one store in San Diego. When the lady in the store ask us if we ant a CC we told her we have no SSN because we are not US residents. She said was not a problem and I filled the form and got the credit card with a credit limit of 500 dollars. During the years the credit limit has been increased up to 5,800 and have had the card without issues for the past 12 years now.

I do not have late payments, and my payments are always above the minimum :) for example min=65, payment=100 or more, some months we do payments without consuming but most likely we use it every other month. So everything was good until I received a new plastic (the blue card) that I need to activate by phone, but by calling the number I'm always asked to type the card number and the SSN that I have never had, no menu for options, no personal attention. I even tried to cheat the system by waiting without typing anything and the systems after 3 messages says "no response has been received, good bye" :(

Because I have the old plastic (the one with the happy face :) ) I was still using it until this week when they decline the card. Asked the personnel at the store and they said I need to call to the number on the card (the one that requires a SSN) I explained the situation to the lady in the front desk and she said they cannot do anything, :( that it is an automated system. I tried to use it online and same story, the card is rejected. So, I waited for the mail expecting to receive a notice, but there is no notice at all about the cancellation or rejection, the last minimum payment was 85 and I paid 140 on time and it is well credited in the report, no late fees, no advice, nothing.

I have just read in this very site that they are in the rights of cancelling the card at any time. Perhaps they got scared that I have reached around 2000 bucks of credit (for which I'm paying around 140 to 150 per month minimum) and I have no SSN, neither a physical address in US, just the postal address.

What can I do? Should I just continue making payments until I reach zero and that is it? i feel that it is some how discriminating if that is the reason, they knew in first place I had no SSN when they expedite the credit card and as I said I have always be in good standing. Very sad history for me.

Please throw me your thoughts, what options do I have?

Regards,

Daniel.

If I understand correctly, you have a balance you are working on paying down but also like to use your card on top of that. And there wouldn't be a problem if you could just activate the new card they sent to you? It sounds to me like they won't be giving your any more notices and nothing about your account has changed - they just sent you a new card to activate to replace the old one (perhaps the old one expired).

I have a Walmart card, but they've never sent me a new one that needed to be activated. With a lot of cards, however, you can also activate them online (since the option to do so over the phone is a dead end). Do you have an online account set up? If you pay online, it would just be the same place you log in to pay, and you may be able to find a link to activate your new card there.

If you can't find a way to activate the card online, but you do have your account set up online, you can use the chat function to speak with someone that way. You will have to send a secure message, and it will take a couple of days to get a response, but they will be more knowledgeable than the typical Walmart employee.

When you tried to ask an employee at Walmart, is the "front desk" you referred to their customer service desk? Failing everything else, you might try just going back there. Hopefully you will get someone else. If they can't help you again, you might have to ask to speak to a manger or someone that has a clue about their credit card program.

You should be able to get it activated one way or another (I imagine having no SSN or physical address makes a lot of things more difficult!). At the very least, though, make sure you continue paying off your balance. Even if you never use your card again, you will need to make all payments on time and get your balance to zero or it will come back to haunt you.

But, again, there's got to be some way to get through if the hotline gives no route to speaking with a human. Best of luck!

Thanks for the reply ;)

Yes, that pretty much resumes the situation, also you are right, I have always talked to the customer service desk personnel, I use to do the payments in-store instead of sending the payment via regular mail.

Here is the link I've got for activation
https://www2.onlinecreditcenter6.com/co ... dc47c:G8hF

There is no other place inside my account for this. But today I've got lucky and talked to a person over the chat, she gave me one hint, she told me to call and when the system requires the SSN I should say aloud "Agent". So I will give that a go.

If that does not help I will try what you said about talking to a manager at the store this Saturday I need to make the next payment, and if that does not take me to anywhere I guess I will have to continue paying the balance and frame both cards (the one with the happy face and the new blue one) as goo memory for all these 12 years.

I will come back with the result of this. Thanks you so much for your advise.

Best regards,

Good, glad you found a way to (hopefully) be able to talk to a person over the phone.

Man, the happy face one must be pretty old indeed! How long ago was Walmart using happy faces before their new "spark" logo they have now (I think that is what they call it)? Does your blue card have the "spark" logos all over it? I've only had my card since 2013 (IIRC), and that's the design I've had the whole time.

Hope that trick will let you clear things up, though.

I don't understand, doesn't the card have a regular customer service number you can call to talk to a human?

The store manager won't be able to do anything other than call customer service for you.

He tried calling, but the number was for an automated prompt system that required the caller to enter the SSN to proceed. He doesn't have a SSN - so couldn't get through the automated system - and couldn't find a way to speak to a person. The OP later found that saying "agent" at any time during the automated process should connect you with someone.

Try using all 0's as your social, or all 9's. Or possibly 123-45-6789. Their system must have a placeholder social security number for you since it's "required" (at least now it is) and you still have an activate account. Or the cashier who signed you up must've typed a bogus number that was never validated.

Well, thank you for all of your opinions, let me share with you the story, it is ridiculous at least for me.

I called the number the lady gave me over the chat, here is a copy paste of the last part of the chat:

2:20:34 PM : AgentShayla: I am sorry to learn about the inconvenience. Thank you for using the Walmart Credit Card Services Live Chat. For your privacy and security this Chat will be limited to providing assistance with login and registration of your credit account only. You may also call our customer service department at 1-800-294-7880 for account specific questions.

2:22:05 PM : CustomerDaniel: Ok, I will give that a try, last number I've got started asking the credit card numbers and the SSN numbers. Is this number you are giving me a person-to-person number?

2:22:50 PM : AgentShayla: Just say the word, "agent" to be connected to a live person for assistance.

2:23:06 PM : CustomerDaniel: Perfect. Thank you so much. :)

So I called and the "Agent" trick did not worked at all, I tried during the entire recording, during the question for if a person in my house has more than certain age, offerings for Satellite TV, cellular phone, Holiday Inn, Etc. Finally after pressing the # sign to end every single offer I was asked to provide my ZIP CODE... and :beat: PUM the message ends saying... "we are sorry this number no longer works for that specific area, please dial 1-800 bla bla bla...

Same history in the provided number a bunch of offerings and the trick for calling aloud an agent does not work.

So, this Saturday I went to the store in Dennery Road, San Diego, asked the lady in the Customer Service about the topic and she said there is not much I can do in the store, and the same history that it is an automated system now for everything related to the credit cards. She ask me if I called the number, I said yes, I explained her about the recording, she gave it a try and confirmed what I told her, so I proceed to your recommendations and asked her if I can speak to a manager.... SHE WAS THE MANAGER  .

She got the idea of trying with the old Smiley happy face card, and after 4 or 5 passes and some transparent tape that she added to the card, taraaan... it was accepted. So I will continue trying to activate the blue with sparks, in the meantime she said that maybe they were rejected online because the system detected a mexican IP address, which makes no much sense because back in May I paid almost 800 dlls for a medical tool that my son needed from home.

Anyways, Man, I'm glad that the card is readable for payments, I just do not want to leave any debt without proper attention so I made my 114 bucks payment over I guess 75 minimum and I hope to pay another 500 this weekend, I will see how long the happy face remains happy, honestly after 12 years the poor card is all beat up.

Regards to everyone and thank you so much for your recommendations. I will give the 1234... or 00000 a go and see what happens.

Daniel
