Lowes or Home Depot

Which card is the best and offer the most. Lowes or home depot? Also which credit reporting agency does Lowes and home depot pulls from. I live close to both stores.

"Best" is very subjective, depends on what your specific needs are.

When I was looking to buy appliances for a kitchen remodel a few years back, Lowes carried Samsung products, which I wanted; Home Depot did not. So Lowes got my business. They also had a package deal going at the time and in addition, I could choose either an additional 5% off the price of the package, or go for 0% financing for 18 months. That was a very attractive reason to shop Lowes, in addition to their having the appliances I wanted.

Conversely, Home Depot carries Tuff Shed brand outbuildings, which I wanted to add to my property. Lowes didn't carry that brand. HD also offered 0% financing for 24 months on purchases greater that $499 at the time, AND in addition, they sent me a promo flyer that if I made a purchase over $999 they would increase my credit limit.

So "best" worked out for each of them in different circumstances.

Lowes pulls predominantly Transunion and that's what they pulled for me. Home Depot seems to pull equally from Experian and Equifax; for me it was Experian IIRC.
Retired, and in the process of retiring cards!

Lowes is easier to get high CL with.

Lowes gives 5% military discount if this applies to you.

I agree. In less than a year with my lowes card I received two CLI, and now have a CL of 10k with them (my first 10k on any of my cards). They have been awesome, just don't mix regular spending for the 5% with the promotionals. I realized this from the get go and haven't paid a dime of interest since I got it (at this point it has been a year, and I've done 3 different projects already).

The military discount may be higher here because of nearby Camp Lejeune, but my Dad gets 10 percent.

I see you list Discover as a card you want. Q3 Discover has home improvement as the 5% category. Full details are not yet available.

Just another option to consider.

I have both cards and from my experience, got HD first ~2yrs. ago w/500 limit. Stayed there until I asked for increase 8 mths back for 4000. Now I have a 4,500 limit. But it cost me a HP from EQ...nada since and won't as long as it's a HP...

Lowes just got end of March 7,000, called credit solutions next morning asked for 10,000 and got it... using approval report..called again next day asked and given 25,000 using approval HP.

To me Lowes was easiest to increase CL...they did pull EX for me here in NC, all GECB now SYNCH had always used TU so that was news to me. I feel like as long as Citi continue to NOT do any SP CLI'S, they are pushing people to Lowes. Also same problem with BB in my book.
LOWES, DISCOVER-iT, MACY'S-AMEX PREMIER ELITE, AMEX-EDP, AMEX-BCP, CITI-DC WEMC, JCP-PLAT MC, CITI BESTBUY, CHASE SAPPHIRE , CHASE FREEDOM VS, BELK ELITE, HOME DEPOT :beat:

If you can buy what you need online (which comes with advantages and disadvantages), ShopDiscover will give you another 5% cash back at Home Depot.

So if a purchase isn't time-sensitive and you can make it online in Q3, that's 10% cash back.

Lowes is in the Q3 5% category, but there's no 5% portal for them.

I'd get Discover before either store card. Why bother with bad customer service and sneaky financing tactics when you can get 0% with Discover?

*Then again, you may need a very high CL, and Discover is unpredictable there. So that factor might favor a store card.*

People are saying that Lowes is easier to get a CLI from. This might be true as a rule as Sync CAN be pretty easy going with soft pull CLIs but it's not a hard and fast rule.

My own experience is I got both when I bought a house last fall. I got a 10k limit from Lowes, which does have the option for 5% off OR special financing if your purchase is over a certain amount. Since I got the big stuff for the house I almost always picked 0% for 6 months.
Sync does not seem to like when people do that and pay off the balance before the 6 months. They seem to prefer pay in full or if you don't they want to eat you alive with interest. I did the 0% many times for quite a bit of money and always paid before the interest kicks in. This is important because if you don't, they hit you with retroactive interest, meaning from the date of the purchase, which could tack hundreds of dollars onto what you owe. Good for Sync, but not so good for your finances.

Given that I'd had it for 9 months with no CLI at all, and pretty heavy use (albeit not use that made them the sort of money they would like at the 25% APR) I requested a CLI online. Totally, completely, 100% shot down. Got the rejection letter in the mail which stated the usual litany when they want to deny you - too many inquiries and new accounts. If that's the worst they've got, ok, I get it.

Then I went to my Home Depot card which got a 1.7k starting limit but I had never used. Requested a CLI. I thought if I'm going to take a hard pull let's make it worth it. I requested 10k and an hour later had the 10k, but of course got a pull on EX. Then they sent me a 10% off coupon.

So they clearly want to do business, and Sync clearly doesn't much care for a customer like me. I made Sync's wish come true and closed out the Lowes card and am going forward with Home Depot. Frankly Home Depot is closer and they have equivalent stuff, though I'm sure I'll still do business with Lowes it's just for the big stuff to use the 0% promotions I'll go with Home Depot from now on.

Point is the rules given here are GENERALLY but not always true. Lowes did give me a larger starting limit, but they sure as hell would not budge after that.

And Home Depot (Citi) pulls EX and Lowes (Sync) pulls TU.

Well, reviewed all the answers and decided to go with the Discover Card over the Home Depot and or Lowes card. I applied on Friday and was approved with an $8k credit line. Good info from everyone. Guess I have to change my tagline now! :lift:
