I'm confused. Why do you think they won't count gift cards for the 5%? Because it counts cash equivalent and prepaid cards as ineligible purchases?

    gamma,
exactly but the question is how will they be able to monitor it, I have been buying gift cards for my kids to give as gifts for birthday parties from our local rite aid, If you buy a few small items so they amount isn't a round number say $25,$50,$75 or $100 how would they ever know

They have always counted cash equivalents and prepaid cards as not eligible for 5% cash back. But they have no way to monitor that. They cant see what you purchase...

Just like Cashback said, they have always put that in all reward credit cards. I'm actually surprised that wording isn't in your original reward program.
If you're worried they will monitor your purchases that seem like gift card transactions, just throw a pack of gum in your purchase to throw them off. I still buy 200 gas gift cards from Safeway with my bcp and they haven't done anything to my account.

I would not assume that just because you charged a gift card to a BCE card, you would receive the cash back reward. It's pretty easy from an IT perspective to figure out what the purchase line item is when it posts to Amex. Honestly I'm surprised this hasn't been done for a long time now.
