Default Young, single, best card to pair with Forward?

I just got accepted for the citi forward today. My main reason to apply for this was because I can get points for shopping on amazon and buy an amazon gift card for which it equates to 5% cash back, if I am understanding that correctly? I can also get those points from restaurants.

However, it is horrible for gas or groceries which are also very important. So I need a card to pair with my forward.

Ive heard good things about AMEX blue cash preferred and everyday. I live with my mom right now but will start my full time job next fall where I will most likely be living alone. I dont want the chase freedom because There is also the chase freedom which sometimes give you great 5% benefits, but when it is not in rotation its pretty useless. I could use that as an option for a 3rd card but I would still need another card for when its not in rotation.

I really appreciate any help you can offer. Thanks guys!

I wish I could edit my post but I ended up going with an AMEX blue cash everyday. I didnt know if I could spend enough to cover the fee and wanted to be able to not use it if I decided to without canceling.

So what would be the best card to pair with those two? Im thinking I should get a discover card and use the 5% rotation, and then AMEX when not in rotation.

I dont know how your credit is but I think the Chase Freedom is alittle harder to get than the Forward. Not only from friends getting denied for it and such but I have a Forward account with a 4k limit and Creditkarma is showing that I have poor chances of getting the Freedom. I personally like Citi better and unless you are completely crazy about getting the most points humanly possible for every purchase you make, the Forward is more than enough imo. Also from what Ive read the starting out limits for the Freedom are nowhere near as high as the Forward. Most people start out with $500, on the Forward I started with $1800 and on the first credit increase they increased it to 4k.
(Sorry I just reread your post and noticed you DIDNT want the Freedom.. lol)

Have you looked at the BoA Cash Rewards card? It gives you 3% cashback on gas, 2% on groceries, and 1% for everything else for the first $1500 each quarter. This should be easier to get than the Amex BCE.
AMEX BCE ($12500), Citi Forward ($3300), Discover IT ($2250), BoA Travel Rewards ($1800)

I ended up getting a discover more card and the BCE.

The rotating aspect wont be too much of a headache. I will use the BCE when not in rotation or not using forward.

Freedom is a good card, but for a static reward structure, the BofA Cash Rewards card that sakhalin mentioned might be one of your best bets to compliment your Forward. Or the Amex Blue Cash Everyday. Neither have annual fees, the only difference being the 3% gas, 2% groceries that Bank of America offers, where Amex offers the opposite (3% groceries, 2% gas). It's really a matter of which of those two expenses you spend more on. For me it's gas.

Nice choices! Congrats. And I like your spending pattern too; 5% rotation for Discover, 5x points categories for the Forward, and everything else AMEX. It's what I'm doing too since I have those three cards as well.

Just wanted to comment on what paparoach429 said about the Freedom. Personally I've found Citi a LOT harder to get in with. Chase gave me the Freedom card after I burned them big time about 10 years ago, but Citi has declined me every time without fail that I applied for one of their cards, usually for stupid reasons, when even Amex gave me cards and US Bank which is uber prime. So YMMV. Chase is fairly easy to recon with if you are persistent, where Citi is almost impossible to recon with via phone. From what I've read you have to write them a letter and hope for the best. I've tried to recon with Citi, the foreign CSR was pretty much a body filling a seat and had no interest in helping me. You don't carry a balance that's why we declined you. So I went and let a 20 dollar balance hit then they declined me for inquiries. Gotta love bipolar Citi!

That said they have some nice cards but man they will about drive you nuts I think.

99- I applied for the Forward card as well, but I ended up getting approved. I had only one inquiry and that was on Equifax and none on the others so maybe that helped. I can't say anything negative about them because I have been with them for nearly a month...but they've been okay. They're website drives me crazy sometimes though. Discover has the IMHO best website.

I really want a Chase card too though..
