I would have liked to get the Amex Blue cash, but in order to get the rewards, I would have to spend $6500 per year, I hardly spend $1500 per year with credit, so this card would not work for me.
I currently have the hooters mastercard. After putting a total of $5000 on the card, I can be given $50 to put towards the credit card bill. That's like having 1% cash back right? So what rewards card would work for me? I do not travel much, nor do I shop at department stores. Thanks in advance for replies. Last edited by scorch : 03-29-2009 at 06:41 AM. |

Hey scorch what types of categories would you say you spend the most in? How about gas and office supplies for example?
The higher cashback categories is where there is really the potential to earn more cash back. Most rewards credit cards give only 1 to 1.5% on general purchases but the best cash back credit cards give 3% to 5% on some categories. If they're categories you spend in frequently than you're in luck.

I would say the best credit card for groceries & grocery stores would be the Chase Freedom Rewards credit card. I would rank that card as the next best after the Amex Blue Cash since as you mentioned that one doesn't work for you. While the chase doesn't give you the 5% cash back as the Amex does, it does give you 3% in your top 3 categories. Those categories include things such as groceries, gas, fast food and others. Which three of those categories you spend the most in, you will get 3% reward points for which equals 3% cashback if redeemed in the form of a check. For all other categories I believe it gives 1% cashback. Although this is not the 5% offered by the other card above, it is clearly the second best option currently on the market.

Thanks again for the replies. Before I go out and apply for the Chase Freedom rewards card, does anyone know what requirements I would have to meet in order to get approved? Thanks.

Do you know your credit score or approximate range? But more importantly, do you have any negatives on your credit record - if so - what are they? Creditors tend to look more negatively on hiccups on your credit record rather than having a limited credit history.

According to my fico, the only negatives I have are inquiries, short credit history and a high balance on a loan.
My fico score on all three is in the high 600's to low 700's. |

I know Amex was usually requiring 700 and higher scores for most of their cards and Discover was needing 710 and up. Those were both before the credit crunch this fall so those numbers probably have gone up.
But you never know it's worth a shot. Yea you don't want a bunch of inquiries but you should try at least once with one of them. I think between the two I like the Discover More card a lot of times because you get the 5% no matter how little you are spending. I know right now their 5% category is because I just took advantage of that on Friday and bought a couple new dress shirts which I very badly needed ![]()
