Cash back. You can do the Discover Miles that lets you redeem your rewards for travel or for gift cards.

Absolutely. Why not travel free when you travel? We all spend money all year long, so we may as well gain something of value that we were going to buy anyway. Whether it is travel, or gasoline, or whatever, go for the most lucrative rewards that you were going to spend money on anyway.
If I was going to spend $2000 on airplane tickets this year, and I am able to offset that by half by spending 30k through a CC instead of writing checks, I've netted $1000.
If I was going to spend $2000 on widgets and I can offset that by half by using a widgets rewards card for that same 30k, I've netted the same $1k. If you weren't going to travel or buy widgets, though, it's a complete waste.
