Default Something I recently realized about CC points malls...

Even when you are shopping at a brick and mortar store you can still sometimes take advantage of online bonus points from the big CC points malls, e.g., Worldpoints, Ultimate Rewards, Thank You, etc.

For instance, I recently accessed the ContainerStore website via Worldpoints in order to get bonus points for online shopping. However, CS website offers option for in-store pickup of purchases (as does Target and I'm sure numerous other retailers). I bought online, earned the bonus points for doing so and then picked up the items at the store, getting the items right away and avoiding shipping charges.

The next time you're heading to a chain retailer and you know in advance what you're going to buy, check your favorite points mall for a link to the retailer's website. If you can buy online with in-store pickup, you'll get bonus points, save time and potentially avoid impulse purchases while in the store.

I have never thought of such a technique. May I ask how in-store pickup works at places such as Target? I am aware it is an option at many stores these days but embarrassingly I am a bit behind on the times and have yet to take advantage of it. Would one be able to buy simple items like deodorant, toothpaste and toilet paper and request in-store pickup or is this option applicable to the big ticket items alone? If all items are available then your strategy could lead to some considerable rewards for my credit card spending.

I hadn't thought of using it for day-to-day items. I've only done in-store pickup at Container Store. You can call them from your car and they will bring the item out to you. You have to have the receipt that you printed out after the purchase. I doubt you would get this level of service at Target, for instance, but if you shop there much it's worth looking into.

I do this on a fairly regular basis with my Discover More card at Best Buy. Follow the link through Discover's website to Bestbuy.com, buy it with my Discover and pick it up at the store to avoid the wait and shipping.

    Great idea!!

Speaking of Best Buy has anyone had luck getting the bonus points even when a different payment method was used and if so, which credit card mall was it on? The reason I ask is that I have a friend whom was given an iPad. He returned it because what he actually needs is a new laptop for law school. He now has a Best Buy gift card for around $900 and I wish there was some trick to use it through ShopDiscover and net the extra 5% on top of that, even though he wouldn't be paying with Discover. I am 99% sure that is impossible with Shop Discover but am hoping with another bank it is, even if the extra points or cash back aren't as high.
Disclosure: I am a moderator/paid staff of this site, which does have advertising relationships with some credit cards that are discussed. Regardless, anything I say is my honest opinion.

    Current Cards:
American Express: Blue Cash, Simply Cash Bank of America: WorldPoints Platinum Plus Chase: Amazon, British Airways, Cash Plus Rewards, Freedom, Ink Cash Citi: Thank You Premier, Dividend Platinum Select Discover: More
Primary Everyday Card: American Express Blue Cash
Primary Travel Card: Citi Thank You Premier

I have never used the online points mall but after reading this, that's about to change. Which card has the best program for this?
