Default Should I skip Talbots credit card and get loyalty rewards?

Would you be better off without the Talbots credit card and using the regular loyalty rewards with a different credit card? The Talbots card application states it gives 1 point per dollar. The Talbots loyalty rewards without the credit card gives 1/2 point per dollar. Both give $25 for 500 points and by my math the credit card gives me 5% and the non-credit card gives me 2.5%. What would be better to do? Using the Talbots card or taking the 2.5% and then using it with a rewards credit card from a bank?

I think you should consider a no-fee cashback credit card from any of the major banks. You can explore most of those offerings on this site and others. If you have a local/regional bank or credit union you like, you might see what they offer.

A store-branded rewards card as you describe doesn't sound like a good idea to me, mainly because the only offers one product line: apparel. I think you risk being encouraged to overspend on clothes because you have this card. For the same reason I would avoid cards that are branded by other single-category retailers, e.g. Best Buy, etc.
    CARDS (and why)
FIA Card Services: Fidelity Amex (best cash back excepting 5% cards), Fidelity Visa (spare)
Chase: Freedom (only for 5% reward categories, purchases under $10), Sapphire (not in use), Amazon Rewards (for Amazon purchases only)
CapitalOne: No Hassle Rewards (no foreign transaction fee, my only MasterCard, not in use)
Amex: Blue Cash Everyday (not in use)
Discover: More (only for 5% reward categories)

I am fairly responsible with keeping my shopping under control most of the time but I see your point. If I got the Talbots credit card my total discretionary spending would probably not change although I get what you are saying, that it could motivate higher spending at their store when I should be shopping around. My card I have right now from Bank of America gives 1% and I would like to find a way to do better. Are there any credit cards that give double or triple points on clothing? At least that way if I stacked it with the Talbots loyalty rewards I would be earning 4% to 5% and that is similar to their card. With my line of work I do end up shopping there quite a bit for work wear and saving money on that would be helpful

To compare a few cards that offer up to 5% cash back at clothing and department stores for part of the year, you may wish to check out this sponsored section: best cash back credit cards.
