Default Chase Freedom and Discover rewards calendars are nearly identical this year.

In case you haven't noticed, the rotating rewards categories and corresponding quarters for Chase Freedom and Discover are nearly identical this year. However, Chase is offering 5% rewards on spending up to $1,500 per quarter. In the first quarter, for instance, Discover is only offering 5% on spending up to $800.

The only significant difference in the calendar categories is during this quarter, 1Q2011, when Freedom is paying 5% on gas and drugstores and Discover is paying 5% on restaurants. For me there will be no reason to carry the Discover card for the rest of the year after I reach $800 in restaurant spending this quarter since Freedom will be offering the same reward categories at the same time and with a higher cap for the remainder of the year.

One other point to consider, Freedom cashback redemptions begin at $20, while Discover makes you wait until you have $50 accrued.
    CARDS (and why)
FIA Card Services: Fidelity Amex (best cash back excepting 5% cards), Fidelity Visa (spare)
Chase: Freedom (only for 5% reward categories, purchases under $10), Sapphire (not in use), Amazon Rewards (for Amazon purchases only)
CapitalOne: No Hassle Rewards (no foreign transaction fee, my only MasterCard, not in use)
Amex: Blue Cash Everyday (not in use)
Discover: More (only for 5% reward categories)

Surely this is no accident as the two are gunning for the same customers.

Another point to contemplate is the higher cap on 5% offered with the Freedom card.

What about the tactic of getting both and switching from one to another once I have reached the rewards ceiling?

I feel the categories last year on Freedom were better. I liked the education category but that is no longer being offered.
