Great tips on the travel cards Rob!

I have set a goal for this year of $2000 in rewards.
Based on your breakdown that sound achievable. With the $1000+ offer I got, I could see myself hitting $2,500 to $3,000 this year if I play my cards right, literally.

So far this year I've made about $675 in cashback and gift cards
I have you beat so far this year, ha. I took advantage of that British Airways 100k miles promotion (since expired) and the stipulation was to spend $2,500 during the first 3 months. There was a big purchase I was planning anyway so I held of on it until the card arrived and that allowed me to meet the threshold the very first week. My first billing cycle closed and I now have 107k miles - I feel rich! I know the value of airline miles can be iffy depending on how they are used but the absolute minimum value of that I would say is $1070 and could be significantly higher if I use them for flights far in advance so I can book at the bargain basement point levels. I will probably end up converting them from BA to AA miles because as much as I would like to go to Europe, it's not on the top of my list by any means.
Disclosure: I am a moderator/paid staff of this site, which does have advertising relationships with some credit cards that are discussed. Regardless, anything I say is my honest opinion.

    Current Cards:
American Express: Blue Cash, Simply Cash Bank of America: WorldPoints Platinum Plus Chase: Amazon, British Airways, Cash Plus Rewards, Freedom, Ink Cash Citi: Thank You Premier, Dividend Platinum Select Discover: More
Primary Everyday Card: American Express Blue Cash
Primary Travel Card: Citi Thank You Premier

Admittedly this is me from the get-go.

I want simple ... I like simple. Its why I endeavored to get my Amex Green back.

Chase Freedom is next on my list lol.

So far since Jan. 1, 2011 I've made $464.57 in credit card cashback alone. This includes the redemption of some cashback that was earned during the fourth quarter of 2010, but most was earned this year. Most of the cashback came from my Fidelity Amex card.

Besides the cashback, I got a $50 gift card for opening a Sony Visa account with CapOne and $100 for opening a checking account with Chase. (As I said in another post, I missed out on the $500 Chase Sapphire promotion because I already have the card.)

Loyalty program rewards added another $35, and $100 came in the form of gift cards for frequent flier miles that I was able to cash in by first transferring them to the Amtrak Guest Rewards program.

I could be making more by juggling multiple cards, probably a few hundred bucks more, but it's much easier to track my spending when I'm just using the one card, Fidelity Amex.
    CARDS (and why)
FIA Card Services: Fidelity Amex (best cash back excepting 5% cards), Fidelity Visa (spare)
Chase: Freedom (only for 5% reward categories, purchases under $10), Sapphire (not in use), Amazon Rewards (for Amazon purchases only)
CapitalOne: No Hassle Rewards (no foreign transaction fee, my only MasterCard, not in use)
Amex: Blue Cash Everyday (not in use)
Discover: More (only for 5% reward categories)

I read through this entire thread and came across a number of useful tips. Really the way I see it is that this is a perfect example of why maintaining a good credit score is so important. It doesn't matter if you don't need a loan or mortgage because good credit will mean the difference of whether you can play the banks at their own game and make off like a bandit with rewards or if you will be on the other side of the fence paying fees.

I don't find that 5% cards all that helpful half of the year. I actually began using my Penfed platinum because of the instant credits and the 5% on gas. I also picked up a Discover Miles card so I could get double miles consistently. Lastly, I got the Bank of america accerlerated rewards American Express for 1.5% on everything. I find I have to mix these cards up to get the most bang for my buck.

I just beat last year's total by almost $71 with a total of $889.64 of cashback rewards from Fidelity Amex, Chase Freedom and Chase Amazon. This does not include promotional offers for opening new accounts, etc. I made more this year despite juggling fewer cards because I took greater advantage of the reward points mall (WorldPoints) available via the Fidelity Amex card.
