AMEX Plat Card-Can you use United gift certificates for the "$200 Airline Fee Credit"

Postby osuwillis » Tue Apr 15, 2014 2:27 pm

Can anyone advise if I purchase UNITED gift certificates from UNITED if these will qualify for the AMEX Platinum Card "$200 Airline Fee Credit"? I am not aware that you can buy actual UNITED "gift cards" anywhere. In talking directly with AMEX, they gave me the impression that a UNITED gift certificate would show up as a "ticket purchase" and thus not qualify for the "$200 Airline Fee Credit." Has anyone been successful in purchasing UNITED gift certificates and then getting it reimbursed by AMEX under the "$200 Airline Fee Credit"?

Multiple times. The catch is that when you go to redeem, you can only use one gift certificate per ticket purchase. A better alternative is to set up a Gift Registry. It acts more like a travel bank. Even if you fund the registry with multiple deposits, you can still use the entire balance all at once.

Also, for you and for everyone else - there's a saying - don't kill the the goose that lays the golden eggs. When you're trying to do something that may be outside of the rules, please DON'T CALL CUSTOMER SERVICE.

Thanks for the information. But, I'm still not clear on this overall process. Are you suggesting that you buy United gift certificates and then deposit them into the United Gift Registry? And if so, what $ amount of gift certificates are you purchasing that still get paid for under the AMEX "$200 Airline Fee Credit"?

DJREZ4.... Also, I don't see where UNITED is an airline partner on the AMEX website. Is this an issue??

This can be done but is very unpredictable. I've heard that buying multiple gift cards is better at getting than one big $200 purchase, for example buy four at $50. Although you may not be able to redeem them all at once, you have a better chance at AMEX giving you your statement credit. The airline credit is for any airline of your choice, doesn't have to be a AMEX MR partner.

Doesn't matter if they're a partner. You're not transferring points. Call Amex and ask to have United assigned as your airline for reimbursement.

And no, you do not buy certificated and then deposit them into the registry. You deposit directly into the registry with the Platinum card.

You need to head to Flyertalk and do some reading. Start here.
