What Does Everyone Think of the Amex Everyday Card?

Postby beachminter » Tue Mar 25, 2014 2:05 pm

So I see they are now available to apply for on the American Express website. What does everyone think of them? I like that they earn Membership Reward points but don't like that I have to spend 20 or 30 times a month to receive the bonus.

2% at supermarkets? 1% elsewhere. If I used it 20+ times a month, I'd lose better opportunities with other cards which wouldn't be made up with the 20% bonus.
In my Wallet:
  • Amex PRG NPSL[3-14, bd 91]
  • Sallie Mae MC $8000[1-14]
  • Chase Freedom $4700[1-14]
  • Discover It $2750[8-13]
  • BoA UCF Alumni Cash Rewards $5000 [3-15]
Sometimes in my Wallet:
  • GM BuyPower WEMC $5000[9-14]
  • Wells Fargo Propel 365 Amex $7000[4-14]
  • Barclaycard Arrival WEMC $7000[3-14]
  • BoA Better Balance $3000[2-15]
In my sockdrawer: Amex BCE $1000[10-13, bd 91], OCCU Duck $10000 [11-13], The Sportsman's Guide Visa $8000[8-14], Chase Slate $4000 [9-14]Delta Gold Amex $2000 [2-15 bd 91], Diners Club MC $20000 [10-14] Commerce Bank Visa $2000 [3-15] Citi Double Cash $1000 [3-15]
Total CL: $90450

the preferred version is better if you know how to use your points. 4.5x on groceries and 3x on gas can easily beat 5% CB categories, but this is assuming you redeem on airlines that allow you to multiply your points value. personally, I find it marginally better since I don't fly first/business.

I'm not impressed... I already hold the Blue Cash Preferred, which seems to be the more lucrative grocery/ gas card. Also, I tend to agree that Chase Ultimate Rewards points are generally more valuable than Amex MR points... I already have the Freedom/ CSP combo which rakes in the UR points.

I think MR is still a little bit more valuable than UR. Being able to make instant transfers has saved me a few times.

That being said, I have three Amex cards already and am not in a hurry to get a fourth. Not being able to PC to this card is stopping me from getting one. Maybe later this year I will close my SPG and get one. My wife alone swipes >30x a month so that part isn't an issue--well it is an issue but not one to be discussed here :-p
American Express (2005): Premier Rewards Gold & Blue Cash Preferred
Chase: Freedom & UA Club USAA: Signature Visa & American Express
Discover it Bank of Hawaii Hawaiian Airlines WEMC Synchrony Sam's MC
Navy FCU Platinum Visa Citi Double Cash & AT&T Access MC

I guess it would depend largely on where you like to transfer points...

That's interesting though... No PC to the new everyday cards? I wouldn't be able to PC BCP to Everyday?

I think the preferred is worth it if you can get a value of 1.5 or greater out of MR. If you can, you net 6.75 on groceries and 2.25 on uncategorized, which is about the best you'll find.

I think it's also worth noting that it's set up to be a card you put almost all your spending on, meaning you're going to have a lot of MR points to use. Unless you regularly fly/book hotels that have good MR redemption, it would be easy for the points to pile up.

Personally I won't get it because I don't have an established travel schedule or location, aka I'm not settled in for good yet. If I end up living somewhere where I know I'm going to take a lot of flights with good MR redemption rates, I'd definitely consider this card.
