Charge Card Questions for Small Business

Postby cree » Thu Mar 20, 2014 6:16 pm

Hello,

I run a seasonal business usually do about 50-75k in purchases a year through my debit card. Figured I might as well be earning some type of reward if I am going to be spending money and using debit.

What would you guys recommend? I've never really had a rewards type of card. All of my vendors accept AmEx and I was looking through their cards.

What would you like? Cash back? Airline rewards? Hotel stays?

I was originally planning on looking for a card that offers cash back. From the looks of it though the points system rewards more towards a hotel/airline flight than I would if I get cash back. Am I correct on this?

Does it need to be a charge card?

It would help if we knew what your major spend categories are as well as what rewards you're looking for.

Yeah, more details indeed.

One major thing to consider is Amex and Chase both charge an AF for most of their business cards. If you are spending in the correct categories though at that level it may be a non-issue.

For a no AF option I would look into the CitiBusiness ThankYou.

Again it all depends on what you plan to spend it on and what kind of rewards you want.

To answer your cash back question: you most always get less when opting for cash back vs. points/miles/merch.

points are worth more, but only if you are good at playing the game. if you've never redeemed hotel stays or flight tickets for points before, there is a learning curve. furthermore, if you prefer to fly economy your points might be capped at around 2 cents per point. points generally tend to be worth more if you like to fly business/first-class, or stay at high end hotels.

you may not get as much if you do cash back, but it's still fairly competitive to points at the low end, and it's hassle free.
