Amex MR / Chase UR worth?

Postby linuxmachine » Sat Mar 15, 2014 8:42 pm

I've been thinking about whether I should keep accruing pure points or focus on cash back a bit more. I won't be flying more than once a year, and maybe I'll do an international flight every 3 or 4 years. Most likely these flights will all be on economy. I still stay at hotels like hilton, hyatt, etc. throughout the year. I'm thinking my points are pretty much capped at 2 cents per point, but closer to 1.5 for regular redemptions overall. Does that sound about right?

I was checking for a room for July 4th in Pittsburgh at the Hyatt House. Room rate is $209 plus tax for the night. If I used 8,000 points to pay for the room (it's a category 2 hotel) they are worth 2.9 cents each. If I do the cash & points ($55 cash plus 4,000 points) the redeemed points are worth 3.85 cents each. Seems as if the cash & points makes the points worth more than using all points. Again, I'm basing the points from credit card spend and at 1 point per dollar because I have no idea how many of my points are from double point categories. I'd say 3.85 cents per dollar spent back (7.7 cents at restaurants!) isn't bad at all. So, I'd guess UR points would go further than MR points. Granted, I don't have the CSP card. I use my Hyatt card.

That's great return on the Hyatt point. UR does have some good flexibility with not just airline but hotels too. MR is horrible for anything outside of airlines. Right now, it seems all I have available on MR are Avios for short flights or standard domestic redemption on Delta. Given the exchange rates, not sure if it's worth to trade for JetBlue/Virgin. I know they do bonus promos but I don't like the idea of transfer unless I am going to use it soon.
