What's Best Reward Card for Amazon and Walmart?

Postby Maxburn » Sun Jan 19, 2014 5:40 pm

As I look at my monthly bills the only thing I am seeing with any regularity is Amazon and Walmart purchases, probably because of the convenience of both.

With the cards that have selectable categories could I get Amazon and Walmart purchases up to the 5% cash back range?

Discover will get you 5% online with Walmart. Sallie Mae Barclays will get you 5% at grocery stores where you can get Amazon gift cards, and sometimes Walmart, $250 monthly limit. AmEx Blue Preferred can get 6% on groceries, but the $75 fee puts a dent in the savings. And, of course, the Amazon card gets 3% at Amazon.

Also, look in the Cash Back tab at the top of the home page.

Well not the highest level but that amazon card hits them, gas and restaurants which seems to be a good combination for me.

Do you want to have one card with the same yearly earnings rate or a couple that you rotate use of? Chase Freedom and Discover it would work for the latter strategy (buy gift cards for the off quarters). For the former, I recommend getting a grocery store card and buying gift cards. Lots of options in this category.
Citi Forward ($10.1K), AmEx Blue Cash Everyday ($30K), Chase Freedom ($12.4K), Discover it ($5.5K), Barclaycard Arrival ($12.5K), L.L. Bean Visa ($5K). FICO 806 (TU), 812 (EQ), 806 (EX).

If only Discover IT would offer the click through online shopping discount for Amazon that would truly be the best for me. Unfortunately I don't see it listed.

These other tricks that have me hunting around town for gift cards when I want to make a purchase, honestly I'm not seeing myself actually doing that. I'll chock this up as a maybe but I'd have to work on changing my habits.

The amazon card seems about ideal for my spending at amazon, gas stations and restaurants but Chase seems to be outright hostile with the interest rate and missed payment penalties. I'd be paranoid in paying it off and that's really the only think holding me back from applying.

I'll just add one more way of getting 5% at Amazon:
Get the US Bank Cash+ card and select 5% CB at Electronic Stores. Then buy Amazon Kindle GCs at Best Buy.

Amex BCE: 3% grocery, 2% gas
Bank of America Better Balance Rewards MC: $25/quarter bonus
Barclaycard Rewards Visa Signature: 2% gas, groceries, utilities
Capital One Quicksilver Visa Signature: 1.5% everything
Chase Freedom Visa Signature: 5% rotating
Citi Forward Visa: 5% restaurants/fastfood, movie theaters, amazon.com
Discover It: 5% rotating
SallieMae MC: 5% Groceries, Gas, Amazon
US Bank Cash+ Visa Signature: 5% electronic stores, restaurants
Sock Drawered: Chase Sapphire, Chase Amazon
