Chase Product Change: Should I Go From Freedom To Sapphire?

Postby Michael » Wed Nov 06, 2013 11:12 am

I am trying to use set category cards more so that I don't have to worry about quarterly categories and switching cards in and out of my wallet.

Currently, I plan to use AMEX Blue Cash Preferred for groceries (6%), gas (3%), and Costco. I will use Cap One Quicksilver for everything else (1.5%).

Our major spend categories now are grocery and restaurants, and gas (to a lesser degree because I am retiring next month). Restaurants are about $100 - $150 monthly monthly.

I have Chase Freedom, but I was thinking of doing a product change to Chase Sapphire, strictly for the 2% on restaurants. Then I would have all three major categories covered.

I also have Discover IT, which has at least one 5% restaurant category, but was thinking about just leaving it home for an emergency card and online every so often (you really should leave at least one card at home).

In my case, is converting Freedom to Sapphire (free version) a bad idea? Is it worth the 2% when I could use Quicksilver for dining at 1.5%?

P.S. I have all of my business at Chase so I am aware of the 10% bonus on Freedom at the end of the year, but I only use Freedom now for some categories.

Your call to make as worth is always highly subjective. Calculate out the difference based on your spend.

IIRC you won't get the sign on bonus with a product change.
