Earning credit card rewards for charity donations & bills?

Postby Midori » Mon Oct 28, 2013 9:20 am

The discussionabout "not being able to get rewards for non-retail purchases" got me wondering.

I know a lot of people use credit cards to get rewards points for paying bills and for charitable contributions. But obviously, paying bills and charitable contributions aren't retail purchases. Are there any cards that people particularly recommend for this purpose? And, out of curiosity, how are Paypal contributions to places like Kiva or Zidisha coded, and does it affect your rewards? I remember a long time ago, when making a one-off purchase through Paypal, it would have a little drop-down menu to explain what the payment was for, but most of my recent transactions have been on eBay, and so that drop-down menu hasn't shown up. Even for straight charitable giving that is direct to the recipient organization, like to a food bank, a shelter, missionary medical, etc, how is it coded, and do people get rewards for it, or only with some cards and not others?

I know with united plus cards they do get miles for it, I never thought of contributions as non-purchases really and therefore you don't get "points" for it, same with gift cards.

For awhile I brought Starbuck cards because I was collecting the different designs

I'll try and use one card for all my purchases and then the others only trans would be a gift card/contribution and see. I'm curious too.

And not just giving. We use a (major) animal hospital as our vet, and that is coded as a charity, so we are getting 5% cash back on our (large) vet bills using Cash Plus. But probably not a good idea to claim the bills as a deduction on my tax!
