2013 Citi Forward for College Students Review: Bad Changes?

Postby nvtech » Thu Oct 24, 2013 7:28 pm

I was going through the Citi website for the Citi Forward card and looks like Citi changed the program.
Looks like they completely removed the 5x on Restaurants, Fast Food, Bookstores and Entertainment.

Any of you have any idea how is it for the existing card holders?

WOW

My statement just cut a few days ago and I'm still getting 5x. I hope they don't take it away from me, otherwise this card is basically useless to me. I haven't received anything from them saying about it ending. *knock on woof*

I have applied this card for my wife as she is a Grad student.
I checked the statement and the last one did give 5x points.
Tried to look for the terms and conditions for rewards and could not find a single reference anywhere.
I wish citi would grandfather this card's rewards to existing folks.

Absolutely no reason to get that card now. Those changes are downright awful. But, most places aren't offering 5x points so I'm sure that's why they are getting rid of it. It was only a matter of time.

I'm still getting 5x on restaurants, movie theaters, and even Amazon.

This is what I got from my account Benefit Builder on Citi's website:

"Unless you are participating in a promotional offer, you will earn one ThankYou Point for every dollar you spend on purchases (no other transactions qualify to earn ThankYou Points).

Some offers may allow you to earn more than one ThankYou Point for every dollar you spend on purchases at (1) bookstores, (2) record stores, (3) restaurants, including fast food restaurants, (4) motion picture theaters and (5) video entertainment retail stores (“qualifying merchants&#8221 ;) . The offer to which you responded describes how many ThankYou Points you earn."

So if you applied when you still get 5x points on those categories, you'll still get them.
AMEX BCE ($20,000), Citi Forward ($6,800), Discover IT ($5,250), BoA Travel Rewards ($1,800)

But you don't even get 5% CB with Forward. You get 5% if you're lucky by redeeming for GCs. I use my Forward points on Amazon.com directly and its 4%.

Cash+ is 5% on Restaurants and Fast Food. I'll be pretty sad when Cash+ does away with their 5% dinning categories though.

Thats all very true, but the bigger question is how long will the benefit last for existing cardholders like us...

I get 5% value on gift cards that I value.

Who said the cash + was doing away with the dining categories. I haven't read anything about that.

I have at TYP card that allows me 5% value on many goodies. It's why I plan on keeping that card even after the nice promo I have for it runs out.

I wasn't about my Citi Forward bonus points, either. Other sites mentioned the bonus points weren't being honored.

I've only made one large Ebay purchase, which I carried out at 0% APR for a while, but that didn't fit the bonus categories, so I wasn't sure.

I called Citi and they sent me a letter confirming I'm "enrolled in the promotional offer to earn 4 bonus ThankYou Points per dollar spent in the following categories: restaurants, movies, bookstores, and music stores." (Does Amazon fit the bookstores category?)

The question would be: is the promotional grandfathered if you already had it when you got the card? Or is it similar to a 0% APR for xyz months?

I notice that current offering of the Forward card is strictly 1 point per dollar earned. The card is still good for cell phone replacement if you use it to pay your monthly cell bill. If you have an expensive phone, that's certainly a good perk.
