Is there a place in my wallet for Freedom?

Postby ckkiw8 » Thu Oct 24, 2013 10:20 am

Hi there, we received a targeted offer in the mail yesterday for Freedom that gives $200 cash back after $500 in purchases in 3 months, and 0% intro apr until Feb 2015 (this is different from their publicly advertised offer).

Besides those items, would there be any reward benefit to add this card based on what we already have (see signature below for cards)?
Amex BCE (25K), Amex Costco (7K), Citi Forward (12K), Chase Disney (15k), Chase Freedom (18K), Chase Sapphire (8K), GE Capital Gap Visa (8K), US Bank Cash+ Visa (13K), Business: Chase Ink (17k), Not Used: BofA Royal Carib Visa (11K), Home Depot Store Card (5K)
Credit Score: 830

In 2013, Freedom had 5% on gas in Q1 and Q3, and 5% on restaurants in Q2.
The 5% on drugstores in Q1 was very helpful for some people with particular spending habits.
5% on Amazon in Q4 is also helpful for certain people with certain spending habits.
So the lack of choice, and the hit-or-miss nature of the rotating categories, and the $1500 quarterly cap for bonus points, are definitely negatives. But if the bonus from having a Chase checking account, and if you use the Rewards Mall, that might make up for it.

It's most valuable for people with the Sapphire Preferred, as the points can be transferred to that card, and then on to partner airlines/hotels, which usually gives much better value than the cash back 1c per point

I'm sure the rotating categories will have something that you can use at some point throughout the year. $200 for $500 is a great bonus in my opinion, no annual fee on the card so if there isn't a 5% category that is useful, you don't have to use it for those quarters. Also, if you have a big purchase coming up, you could hit the $500 spending for the bonus and get 0% for 15 months freeing up capital for other investments while you enjoy the interest free loan.
[size=60]Chase Freedom Signature - 10k (rotating 5%)
Citi Platinum Select - 8.1k (rotating 5%)
Discover It - 12k (rotating 5%)
AMEX BCE - 20k (Groceries 3% / Gas 2% )
Regions Signature Visa - 5k
US Bank Cash+ - 5.5k (Restaurants/Fast Food 5% / Drug Stores 2%)
Navy Federal cashRewards Visa Signature - 20k (Business Purchases)
Care Credit - 6k (Vet Bills/Dentist - 0% APR)
Chase IHG Rewards (Priority Club) - 18k (Annual Night Certificate, Platinum Elite Status)

Not used except for occasional purchase with promo:

Thank you for your replies. Defiantly gives me some things to think about.
