2013 Sport Chalet Visa Credit Card Review: What's The Catch?

Postby Gkibka » Sun Jul 28, 2013 2:19 pm

I'm not one for retailer cards but while shopping at Sport Chalet this week I discovered their new Visa card. Have you seen this?
  • Over 6% rewards at Sport Chalet
  • 2% rewards everywhere else
  • No annual fee
This seems too good to be true. I have excellent credit and have many prime level card and not even those give 2% on everything except for Fidelity Amex. The fact that the Sport Chalet credit card is a Visa is a major benefit since I regularly encounter many places who will not accept American Express.

Am I missing something or is this the best thing since sliced bread?

"How do I use my rewards points? A $10 Action PassTM Reward Certificate will be issued automatically when you reach 300 points valid for anything sold at Sport Chalet."

(Am I the only one who cringes at that sentence construction?) :o)

If you shop at Sport Chalet enough to want to spend all your rewards in their store, it would be pretty good. Otherwise, it would be rather limiting.

hehehe agreed that sentence is questionable.

It's not that I even shop at Sports Chalet all that much. The sporting goods I would likely be buying the most of would be Nike and Under Armour and I won't lie, those are more for looks than any necessity. Let's say I charged $25,000 per year on the Visa, that would translate to $500 in rewards. I'm sure it would be quite easy to find $500 worth of shoes and what not to buy each year. I would rather take that over the $250 cash back earned on something like a Chase Freedom.

Now since this post I do see the Barclaycard Arrival on here which is a Mastercard. If I am reading correctly that gives 2.2% rebate on spending to use for travel. Perhaps I will go with that since its bonus offer. I am surprised I haven't seen it before. When did this come out?
