How Many Miles For a Free Flight In 2013? (Share Yours)

Postby MTT » Mon Jul 22, 2013 6:44 pm

Now that many airlines have been switching to a fixed value per frequent flyer miles, I'm finding it a lot harder to get a deal. For your last domestic roundtrip flight, how many miles did it take you for an award flight?

Specifically I'm interested in hearing the answer for the following carriers: Delta, American Airlines, United, Hawaiian, US Air and Spirit. I already know Southwest has the fixed value system which I dislike.

Delta is the worst IMO for mileage value. Good luck trying to get a free flight for 25k with them.

But I do like Delta first class the most.

Delta is bad. US Air is consistently rated worst for award seat availability. Everything is "high" value - 50k points for a domestic ticket. There are never "low" value award tickets available.

I've had good luck with United, both on their metal and on partners through the United site. We flew DEN-PHL-MAD, BCN-ZRH-YYZ-DEN for 120k miles and $190 in fees in March. Next March we'll fly DEN-NRT, NRT-SEA-DEN for 130k miles and the Amex Platinum reimbursed me for the fees.

Sent wife to Chicago last month on Delta, used 30,000 miles and it cost me 60 dollars cash. Seems like a lot of points and still ended up paying some.

On Hawaiian Airlines, it is a minimum of 40k for a domestic roundtrip (20k each way) but the award prices scale to 60k or 80k as revenue flight prices increase. From personal experience, for Pualani Gold members it is reduced (unadvertised) to 35k, 50k, 60k. I would assume Pualani Platinum prices are the same as gold but I could be wrong.

$10000 CHASE Sapphire Preferred (7/13)
$5000 CHASE Ink Plus (8/13)
