First rewards card for a 720 credit score?

Postby otherwhitemeat » Tue Jun 25, 2013 9:11 pm

Id like to open a rewards card but have NO idea where to start. I don't want multiple cards for different purchases, just one for now while I'm still learning how to manage it correctly. I have about a 720 credit score.

I thought about an airlines card, because my reward would feel more like a "reward," but I don't travel other than using the cards rewards so I would just be earning miles from purchases. Is that an inefficient way to earn rewards?

Currently I have a checking account set-up just for automatic withdrawals for all my "set" bills, and I direct deposit the exact amount i need in there from my paycheck. So I could move all those to a rewards card. Is that how you guys do it? How do you know when to pay your bill so you don't get charged interest?

And I currently just use my debit card for all other purchases but I know Id want to change that to the rewards card.

Tell me how its done!

Making 29k/year. I had a Zync card that I loved. Sadly AmEx cancelled it, or at least took away the value in having it. as far as rewards maybe the Sapphire from Chase would make sense no A/F decent rewards..? There's a few Citi cards, but they seem to be on the higher end.

My suggestion is to get the Freedom, much easier to get than most Chase cards. It sounds like you are new to the credit game and the 720 score does not have a lot of leverage just starting out. Good card to start with.

Just got my first rewards card. I ended up with a Capital One Venture card. Im not new to credit, im 30 years old but im finally getting my credit under control after years of poor use. I was as low as 600 at one time but now closer to 720.

What bills can I pay to get rewards? Cars? Utilities?

Oh sorry, I wasn't sure if you we're just getting started. I stumbled a few times when I was young as well.
Utilities, groceries, travel works well with the airline tickets, hotel and whatever you do on that trip.

I use credit everywhere possible and pay in full every month, many times twice a month.
Think of it as a debit card and pay early and often. The rewards add up pretty quick if you work it.
