2013 Discover gas card with 5% cash back

Postby antidovish » Thu May 30, 2013 5:19 pm

What happened to the Discover card that gave 5% rewards at gas stations, can you still get it in 2013 because the application is no longer on their website from what I can see.

My questions are:

  1. Is is still available and if so, where can I find it to apply?
  2. If it isn't available, what are some other good gas cards? I want a card that works at every station, not just a certain brand of fuel.

They once had a card call the "Open Road" (Which I had). It gave you 2% on the first $250 spent on gas & restaurants (COMBINED!) each month. Then the measly 0.25% on all other schtuff you'd buy until you hit like $3,000 or something like that.

It was a crap card. I product changed that card to the More, then to the IT. The IT card is really the only Discover card worth having these days. Next quarter you do get 5% back on gas purchases, up to $1,500 spent I believe.

That's correct. The only gas card from Discover was the Open Road, which had a lackluster rewards program as mentioned above due to the unreasonably low rewards cap. It is now discontinued.

HOWEVER for 2013 the new Discover it gives you 5% at gas stations from July 1st thru Sept 30th. The rewards cap is quite high; $1,500 of spending at gas stations will qualify for the full 5%. So if you average less than $500/month, then you will do great with it.

They haven't announced the rewards lineup for 2014 yet but my guess would be it will be similar to 2013, by including gas stations for one quarter of the year. During the other quarters you earn 5% in various categories. Unfortunately though Discover doesn't have a gas credit card for year 'round savings.

If you want an excellent option for year 'round savings, then it's hard to beat the Blue Cash Preferred. It gives 3% at US gas stations without a cap. It also comes with this generous sponsored signup offer:

I have the Blue Cash myself and highly recommend it. I probably have gotten more use out of the supermarket category, though.
