How to get pre approved for a credit card in 2013?

Postby rosecrans » Wed May 15, 2013 4:27 pm

Question: I used to get tons of pre approved offers in the mail and always trashed them. Now that I actually WANT to get a new credit card there are none being sent to me, go figure! My score is average-ish and I'm not really quite sure how good of stuff I can get in this economy.

Is there any way to see if I'm pre approved even though they aren't sending them to me?

Ironically, I never really got many offers until i started applying for cards. Then I got a LOT of offers in the mail. Most are junk. A few are interesting (like the CSP application I just got in the mail).
Cards:
American Express Platinum (NPSL)
Penfed Platinum Reward Visa ($28K)
Chase Freedom Visa ($25K)
Fidelity American Express ($20K)
American Express Blue Cash Preferred ($20K)
Bank of America Cash Rewards MasterCard ($20K)
Citi Thank You Preferred Visa ($9.5K)
Chase Sapphire Preferred ($7.5K)
US Bank Cash + Visa Signature ($7K)
Discover IT ($4K)

Being pre approved doesn't guarantee approval. Even if you get one of those mailings, you still may be denied when you submit your application.

That being said, if you receive an offer likes that it means a preliminary screen was already done and you appear to be a good match for the requirements of the card. Therefore your odds of getting the card will be quite high.

The only place to get preapproval from multiple banks at once that I know of is by using this sponsored form at CreditCards.com:

Good luck!

CreditCardGuru are those actual pre-approvals? Where they do a SP?

I went there, and the only cards I had pre-approvals for were Amex, which I'm persona non gratis with (blacklisted).

They mainly use TransUnion. Yes they are actual pre-approvals- I know they work closely with the credit card companies in creating and managing that platform. Of course a pre approval isn't a 100% guarantee but it's very close in this scenario.

AmEx will show in the "Exclusive Offers" tab if you're matched for any, but if you click the additional categories of your results, you will see other cards you are pre approved for from other banks. The Exclusive Offers category are just ones with above-average signup bonuses matched to your credit profile, but all of the results on there are pre approved.

How long have you been blacklisted with AmEx?
