us bank cash+ cap (restaurant alternative)

Postby craigm1 » Tue May 14, 2013 8:51 pm

since the party is over with the cap on rewards, was wondering if anybody has alternatives for the restaurant category, I have a chase freedom was wondering about adding the sapphire preferred if it would be worth while. Any other cards that I might consider for the restaurant category??

The only other card that comes close on restaurants is honestly the Citi Forward and you now have to be a student to apply. CSP seems to be 2% or miles back with an annual fee, just get the barclay arrival no af mastercard if you want miles from restaurants/travel or a 2% on everything card if you want cash back at restaurants.
Sole Ownership Cards:
1st Financial Bank Platinum Student Visa, $500 CL, Open Since 3/2012
Citi Forward Student Visa, $6k CL, Open Since 10/2012
Costco TrueEarnings Amex, $6k CL, Backdates to 1/2012
SallieMae Rewards Barclay Mastercard, $2.5k CL, Open Since 4/2013
Jointly Owned Cards (co-owner with mom, not AU, used and paid only by me):
Chase Amazon Rewards Visa Signature, $2k CL, Open Since 8/2012
US Bank Cash+ Visa Signature, $13.5k CL, Open Since 10/2012
Authorized User (Parents Pay/Use)
Costco TrueEarnings Amex $29.4k CL, AU since 11/2012

All good suggestions. Don't forget the Amex Premier Rewards Gold, which gives you 2x points per dollar spent on dining. And also the Amex True Earnings (aka Costco) which gives you 2% cash back on dining.
AMEX: PRG Gold, Business Simply Cash, Business Costco, BCE.
Chase: United MileagePlus Club, Sapphire Preferred, Amazon Rewards
Barclaycard Arrival World Mastercard
HSBC Cash or Fly World Mastercard
USAA World Mastercard, USAA Platinum Mastercard
Wells Fargo Business Platinum
USC Credit Union Mastercard

The PRG doesn't give double points on dining, unless I'm missing something.

Additional Cards can also earn 3X points for flights booked with airlines, 2X points at U.S. gas stations, 2X points at U.S. supermarkets, and 1X points on other purchases.

I would recommend a CSP and a Citi Forward, if you can get it.

Not confirmed, but people have been told that starting the end of July, Citi Premier will give 3x on dining.

The $2000 limit on 5% categories sucks but I don't spend more than $2000 in 3 months on dining.
Cards:
American Express Platinum (NPSL)
Penfed Platinum Reward Visa ($28K)
Chase Freedom Visa ($25K)
Fidelity American Express ($20K)
American Express Blue Cash Preferred ($20K)
Bank of America Cash Rewards MasterCard ($20K)
Citi Thank You Preferred Visa ($9.5K)
Chase Sapphire Preferred ($7.5K)
US Bank Cash + Visa Signature ($7K)
Discover IT ($4K)

Probably true for most of us! But note the $2000 is combined for the two 5% categories, so if you spend a lot in the other that will cut into the available dining cap.

I spend $214 a month on cell bills that's leaving me $452 a month for restaurants good chance I will be going over that amount.

I'm thinking total dining since US Bank splits the dining 5% between fast food and full service. My wife will be getting an Ink Plus for her business soon and my company pays my cell phone. So I won't have to wash those charges through US Bank for much longer.

I had always gotten the US Bank Cash + card as a restaurant card. I've used it for other things since Chase has been doing restaurants this quarter but come summer, it goes back to being a dining card.
Cards:

American Express Platinum (NPSL)

Penfed Platinum Reward Visa ($28K)

Chase Freedom Visa ($25K)

Fidelity American Express ($20K)

American Express Blue Cash Preferred ($20K)

Bank of America Cash Rewards MasterCard ($20K)

Citi Thank You Preferred Visa ($9.5K)

Chase Sapphire Preferred ($7.5K)

US Bank Cash + Visa Signature ($7K)

Discover IT ($4K)
