Transferring points to Marriott vs. booking Ultimate Rewards

Postby FutureBillionaire » Tue May 14, 2013 5:52 pm

Is there a difference if I transfer UR points to Marriott vs booking through the travel site with Chase and using UR points?

I assume in both cases you are trying to book a a reservation in Marriot.

Case 1: Transfer UR points to Marriot:

You are doing a redemption. Not sure how good is the conversion rate.

Case 2: I like this method:

Book through Chase UR site..get the bonus UR points and also get the base hotel points.

Wait for a right time for a promotion from United, British or southwest where the promotion state get 50% bonus or 25% bonus for transfer of miles to Marriott.

It is at that time, I would move my UR points to Airline and from there to the Hotel( Marriott or any other hotel)
I guess this is the best way to give more juice with UR points.

nvtech's method certainly maximizes your points and is a great idea if you have time to play with.

If you are looking to book now: the transfer rate is 1:1 so figure out how many points are required by booking direct with Marriott and then see how many points are required through UR. You get a 20% discount by redeeming through UR but it may still be higher...

Be sure to share the details when it's all said and done!

I posted this in MP but haven't gotten a response yet. I have been playing around with the UR portal more and haven't got all the ins and outs yet...

I just booked a Marriott stay through Travelocity via the UR portal and used my Marriott Premier Visa.

To keep it simple, lets say total charged was $1k. What will my point capture look like?

I know I'll get the 2x UR.
Marriott Premier Visa: 5x?
Points for stay: 1250 (MR Gold)

Thanks

I don't think you'll get the 5x points from Marriott because you didn't book directly with Marriott. I know with my Hyatt Visa I have to book directly with Hyatt to get the 3x points. Anywhere else (expedia, travelocity, etc) wouldn't qualify because your charge isn't being billed directly from the hotel.

That's what I concluded too after much research on FT. I think I'm going to canx the reservation on Travelocity and book through Marriott via the UR portal--what I should have done to start with :-\

Thanks
