If I bought clothes just on need and practical use, I would get them all at walmart and have 3-7 outfits. I like clothes. Video games. Sporting events. Do you budget for hockey games? Football games? Those aren't necessities, but I'll gladly use some rewards to subsidize the cost of things that add some pleasure to my life.

Well, I was actually agreeing with you! My point is using points for a flight, even if you wouldn't have taken it otherwise, is no more or less a "waste" as cited by Cashback, than spending cash on something that you also would not otherwise have bought. The reason for both is to "add some pleasure", some like discretionary travel, others prefer to spend on other things. I was objecting to one being called a waste when there really is no difference.

I see. My fault. I think it is more of a waste to use rewards to go on extravagant trips just to say that you went. True, I want to travel to new places, but first class flights to places where I'm not going to do much are a waste.

It makes perfect sense. Im not going to go out and blow $200 just because I got it from CC rewards. Its an extra $200 that can be saved and invested. You cant invest a plane ticket!

For the example I stated, if the plane ticket is in your normal spending and is something you would be buying even if you had no CC rewards, then yes, it is not a waste.

Then we agree. I don't expand my budget for more tomfoolery unless my overall earnings increase. I've decided to buy a few more luxury brand items, but I still budget to live below my means.

Debt elimination is the key for me right now...

@Cashback and Silver, How would it be a waste? I would still be taking these trips with or without these points, its just nice knowing I dont have to worry about coming up with the money for the ticket out of pocket. I can save that money to do things on my trip.

I think we are all agreeing with each other. I use it to subsidize the purchase of things that I might only buy with a bonus or something. If it's that expensive, I will wear it forever.
