If I bought clothes just on need and practical use, I would get them all at walmart and have 3-7 outfits. I like clothes. Video games. Sporting events. Do you budget for hockey games? Football games? Those aren't necessities, but I'll gladly use some rewards to subsidize the cost of things that add some pleasure to my life.
Well, I was actually agreeing with you! My point is using points for a flight, even if you wouldn't have taken it otherwise, is no more or less a "waste" as cited by Cashback, than spending cash on something that you also would not otherwise have bought. The reason for both is to "add some pleasure", some like discretionary travel, others prefer to spend on other things. I was objecting to one being called a waste when there really is no difference.
